The students will identify dead words and replace them more colorful vocabulary. They will accurately identify words that can be replaced in sample writings. MATERIALS: (3 points) Emotion Wheel Print Out Word Replacement Worksheet Words to Avoid Poster

Show and Tell Worksheet Sample Writings Thesaurus ANTICIPATORY SET: (1 point) Teacher will review and discuss the 6 traits of writing. The mini posters will be used as a visual aid. LESSON INTRODUCTION: *Share Objectives (in kid language) for todays lesson.+ (1 point)

Today, we will be focusing on another one of the 6 traits of writing, word choice. After todays lesson, you will be able to create a paper that uses bold, exciting words that will allow your reader to paint more of a mental picture while reading your work. TEACHER MODELING: (1 point) Teacher will introduce and discuss the concept of Banana-Split Words. The teacher will also model examples from chosen books. GUIDED PRACTICE: (1 point) The students will work cooperatively to create, with the aid of a thesaurus, a list of more vibrant vocabulary for a list of words provided by the teacher. Some words to be included are said, happy, awesome, angry CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: (1 point) The students will complete the Word Replacement Worksheet independently. The teacher should watch for students being able to identify words that need to change, finding a suitable alternative, and self-checking the sentences to ensure that the new words maintain the sentences meaning. CLOSURE: *Share Closure (in kid language) for todays lesson.+ (1 point) Now that we have discussed word choice, you will be able to add a whole new level of detail and interest into your writing.
