GENERIC NAME: Febuxostat BRAND NAME: Atenurix DRUG CLASS: Xanthine oxidase inhibitor PHARMACODYNAMICS: Decreases serum uric

acid by inhibiting xanthine oxidase. DOSAGE: PO Start with 40 mg once daily. The dosage may be increased to 80 mg once daily for patients who do not achieve a serum uric acid less than 6 mg/dL after 14 days. INDICATIONS: Atenurix is a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor indicated for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout. Atenurix is not recommended for the treatment of asymptomatic hyperuricemia. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Coadministration with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline. ADVERSE EFFECTS: Dizziness, Rash, Nausea, Abnormal LFTs, Arthralgia NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES: Instruct patients to contact health care provider if they experience chest pain, rash, shortness of breath, or neurologic symptoms suggesting a stroke. Advise patients that product may be taken without regard to meals. Advise patient that concomitant prophylaxis with an NSAID or colchicine for gout flares may be used.
