JPS Weekly

February 27th 2014 Jumeirah Primary School, Dubai Issue No. 23 - 13/14

Sports days at JPS have concluded once again and the days were a huge success, even when they had to be rescheduled for rain!! The PE team was blown away by the support of the parents this year, with hundreds of parents turning out to support their children over the eight separate days. The children were a credit to the school as they competed in the right spirit, with smiles on their faces and with just the right amount of desire to win. Well done to all of the competitors and congratulations to all of our winners!

BOOK DAY 2014

Wednesday, 5th March
We are so excited that World Book Day is next week! Guinness World Record: As you are aware, it is our intention to try and break the record for the largest gathering of people dressed as storybook characters. The record currently stands at 921 participants. On World Book Day, please send all children to school in their costumes. Book Swap: As part of World Book Day, we are having a book swap! The idea is for each child to bring in one book to swap. Throughout the day, children will be taken in their classes to choose a new book to take home. Children can donate more than one book, but will only take one new book home. Please send these books in as soon as possible. CALLING ALL PARENT VOLUNTEERS! We need some volunteers to man the Book Swap tables. If you are interested in volunteering please email: e.deans_jps@gemsedu.com World Book Day Parade: The parade will begin at 1.10pm on the Astroturf starting with Year 1 and following through to Year 6. Please come to support your child and take pictures of them in their costumes!

We look forward to seeing you there!

THE JPS BOOK FAIR

The Magrudys Fair will be taking place on 4th, 5th and 6th of March. A great opportunity to buy books to celebrate World Book Day! Envelopes have been sent home with children in Years 1-6 to put money in to purchase a book if they wish during school time. The average price of a book is Dh50. Book fairs are not compulsory. Please note that FS1 and FS2 children can visit the fair with their parents at pick up time when all families are welcome to have a browse.

MESSAGE FROM THE FRENCH DEPARTMENT

Dear Year 3 and Year 4 students, In 4 weeks time, your end of Term 2 assessment will take place. This assessment will allow you to celebrate and evaluate what you have learnt in French this term. Please refer to the Assessment Revision Guidance document of your year group in the section Home learning on the Weebly next week. This will help you greatly with your revision. Good luck and remember revising a little bit often is better than a lot at once! Merci! Madame Konig

The JPS calendar for the 2014/2015 academic year has been uploaded to the Weebly and GLG. Please note that the calendar is subject to Ministry Approval.

JPS Sports
CRICKET
The JPS U10 Cricket Team was victorious at the ICC Academy! The boys, made up of both Year 5 and Year 6 boys, maintained a 100% record throughout the event and were clear winners in the final against GEMS Silicon Oasis. The team spirit was fantastic throughout the event and the boys demonstrated great class and sportsmanship; this was noted by the Tournament organisers. A huge thank you and well done has to go out to the school community, as JPS was also recognized as the best supported school via the online voting system that ran over the last week! The captain of the team was Muhammad Vakil who led the team of Omar Syed, Ali Nasser, Nirvaan Chandirmani, Syed Aly Rehman, Arvind Sethu, Jessy Adnan Bashir, Rishi Simran Kumar and Gautam Ramchandani. Gautam was also recognized as the Player of the Tournament by the ICC staff. Mr. Gower said that the boys were a pleasure to work with and he is very proud of the winning record, but even more proud of the attitudes that they all showed over the two nights.

Well done Boys!

SWIMMING
Children at JPS are taught to swim without the use of goggles during their curriculum lessons the main reason for this is for water safety. By learning to swim without goggles, the child is better prepared for a situation in which they may find themselves in water unexpectedly (falling into a pool etc.). As always at JPS, our main concern is the safety and well-being of our children. By enforcing this rule during swimming lessons, we are developing children with better water safety skills. We do allow our swimmers in Years 5 and 6 to wear

goggles when we, as teachers, are happy and have evidence that the child is proficient and safe in the water.
If there are medical grounds for the use of goggles, an attested doctors note should be provided. Thank you

Wow! way to go Sean!
