he real way they achieve the piano-wood finish on production swords is by cheati ng! They spray paint them.

If you want to laquer your saya in a traditional fashion, I cannot help you. How ever, I did work in a paint shop for two years, so can tell you exactly how to ' cheat', and achieve that piano wood finish. -Basically, take your saya and sand off ANYTHING that is already on it with 240 grit dry paper. Make sure it is flat and smooth. -Remove all the dust by blowing with compressed air. Tack off with a tack-rag -Spray the whole saya with a high build aerosol primer (the sort they sell for r efinishing damage to vehicle paintwork). When this dries, rub it down with 500 g rit dry paper. If you find yourself breaking through anywhere just apply another coat of primer. Keep going until you've got the right result. -Spirit wipe with lighter fluid! (its actually naptha, basically the same as pro per panel wipe used in paint shops). Buff with a tack rag. -Spray the whole saya with a gloss black acrylic aerosol base coat. Again, use o ne designed for vehicle paint. -When this has dried, spray the whole saya with an acrylic aerosol clear lacquer . -If the finish is crap, polish the saya. This is done by rubbing down the lacque r with 2000 grit wet and dry paper done WET. DO NOT BREAK THROUGH the lacquer. I f you do, use grey scotchbrite on the whole saya and re-lacquer. Then start poli shing again. -Once you have rubbed it down with 2000 grit paper, use a HIGH QUALITY automotiv e rubbing compound to brighten the finish. Finish off by buffing the whole piece with a clean cloth wheel on an electric drill. Should come out gleaming. This method will give you a finish far superior to any of the other ways that ha ve been suggested so far. It might not be traditional, but lets be honest, you'r e never going to be a mukansa anyway, so who cares. It will look lheru; Good thinking, but that would honestly be more trouble than its worth to get the shape right. If it already has lacquer on it, best thing to do is scotch brite the laquer, respray it with base coat, stencil and spray your design and then re laquer the whole thing. Much easier, quicker and safer than messing arou nd with acetone.
