I will write down everyone's top ideas and we will have a vote for which one will be our plan of attack to keep the English language alive.

You are to go through your text book and identify on a piece of paper the 7 different ways or promoting language and culture given in the text. For Each you need to provide an example and a page number.

Ways to promote Language


Laws
Official Language Act 1969 French was not considered to be equal across Canada and a Royal Commission determined that a law of bilingualism is necessary. Both English and French will be used in the Federal Government (Parliament, gov buildings, Senate, etc) French and English must be preserved in language communities within Canada Equality of French and English Is It Effective (TPS)

Ways to promote Language


Rights
Minority Language Education Rights (Constitution Act 1982) (Section 23) The right of parents to educate there children in there language but only French or English Is it Effective (TPS)

The Supreme Court and Section 23


In the 1980s Albertan French family challenge the supreme court stating that their children did not have the right to educate their children in French. The judge rules in favour of the French family and said Language is more than a mere means of communication, it is part and parcel of the identity and culture of the people speaking it

Ways to promote language


Cultural Legislation- government laws to regulate aspects of Canadian culture. CRTC (Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission)- job is to promote Canadian content (CanCon) in the media (Radio, TV, etc) Broadcasting Act-ensures Canadians have Canadian programming Is This Effective?

Television Networks
CBC-French and English Canadian Content La Societe Radio-Canada-French Canadian Content APTN-Aboriginals peoples television Asian Television Network- Presents programming in Southern Asian languages Is it effective (TPS)

Go to page 96 What does it say, What objects are in the cartoon, What is it saying about Canada and other countries or things from Canada and other countries? What is the Cartoon saying about what Canadians would rather be watching?

Ways to promote
First Nations, Metis, and Inuit in Canada: Cultural Revitalization -Education (for example aboriginal language and art) -Political Lobbying and Activism (for example fighting for first nations rights) -Promotion of Cultural events, festivals, media (APTN)

First Nations, Metis, and Inuit in Canada: Cultural Revitalization -Political Organizations: Assembly of First Nations: promotes social, economic, and political goals of First Nations Communities. It has also protected First Nations language and culture

Case Study
Aboriginals use globalization and media to promote their identity Globalization has also caused their identity to be lost. This is the same as aboriginals in Taiwan The use media to promote their identity too. Canadian First Nations: APTN Taiwan Aboriginals: iTV
