Description of the course:

Chemistry is the laboratory study of the properties matter and the changes it undergoes in the materials we eat, drink, breath, and use every day. Topics that will be covered in this course include observation and measurement, atomic structure and theory, bonding, chemical names and formulas, chemical reactions and reaction types, the periodic table. Students will improve their problem solving skills while learning the basics of how things work, from cooking to cleaning to body chemistry and the environment!

Power Standards:
Apply atomic structure to chemical and physical properties Analyze how substances interact to produce new substances Analyze common occurrences using science themes Describe the fundamental concepts, principles and interconnections of the sciences Use scientific investigation to solve problems

Units to be covered:

Major Assessments:
A Benchmark assessment will be given at the end of each chapter, (Chapters 1 6, and 8 10) and following each laboratory activity (laboratory notebooks will be collected and assessed). Formative assessments are given for each section (two or three per chapter)

Student expectations:
Assignments

CHEMISTRY 1. Complete your written assignments and your reading assignments. It is your responsibility to obtain the assignments if you have been absent. There is an assignment box in back of the classroom where I place all paperwork that has been handed out each day. 2. Complete all laboratory activities. If you have been absent, please make arrangements with me to make up the laboratory activity or obtain an alternate assignment. Most lab activities can be finished during one or two ELT periods. 3. All students are expected to complete the laboratory orientation, have a signed safety contract on file, and pass the safety and skills test before participating in any laboratory activities. Supplies You are expected to have these general supplies with you each day: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Textbook Class notebook (chemistry only) Lab notebook (chemistry only) Folder or binder for papers Pens with blue or black ink Pencils Scientific Calculator student

Behavior: 1. Absolutely no bullying or disrespectful remarks toward or about any or any teacher! 2. Be a great listener! This is the best way to show respect toward yourself, other learners and the teacher. 3. No food or drinks, except water, in the classroom. 4. Put away your cell phones and other electronic devices. 5. Limit yourself to two passes per week.
