Deuteronomy 23-24
I. Observation
A. Context
• Who are the people in this passage? Moses is re-telling the law to the Israelites.
• When & where does this passage occur? On the east side of the Jordan before entering the Promised Land.
B. Summary of Events
1. Restrictions on who may enter the assembly of the Lord (23:1-8)
2. Cleanliness in the camp (23:9-14)
3. Refuge for runaway slaves (23:15-16)
4. Have no association with prostitution (23:17-18)
5. Do not charge interest to your brother Israelite. (23:19-20)
6. Vows: Keep your word (23:21-23)
7. Do not harvest a brother's crop for yourself (23:24-25)
8. Restrictions on remarriage (24:1-4)
9. No War for Newlyweds (24:5)
10. Restrictions when securing a debt: Don't impede livelihood (24:6)
11. Do not kidnap (24:7)
12. Care for skin diseases (24:8-9)
13. Lend respectfully and don't take advantage of the poor (24:10-15)
14. Individual responsibility for sin (24:16)
15. Care and consideration for the needy (24:17-18)
16. Leave the remains of your harvest for the needy (24:19-22)

II. Interpretation
• What attributes of God's character are illustrated in this passage?

• What principles does this passage teach about lending/borrowing? Is this different from how things are done today?

• What principles does this passage teach about relationships with the poor and needy?

• Does this passage point us towards Christ? If so, how?

III. Application
• In all we do, we are to pursue holiness; God's holiness should be reflected in how we conduct ourselves in community.
• As God is generous with us, we ought to be generous with one another. Personal lending to each other should not be
done in order to make money your brother, but to help them in their time of need. Don't take advantage of the poor.
• We should be sensitive to the needs of our brothers & sisters and know their situations well enough to know how best to
help them in their times of need. We ourselves should also be willing to let our brothers & sisters know about our needs.
