Sunday: Cycle A
Family Bonding has become a byword among Filipino families nowadays. It means spending quality time together as a
family by engaging in a common activitypicnicking together, moviegoing together, traveling together, gardening
together, etc. There are indeed many creative ways of enhancing family relationship; but their common denominator
is the word together. One of the songs in the musical film,
The Lost Horizon, says it very well:
Living together, growing together, just being together
Thats how it starts, three loving hearts
All pulling together, working together, just building together
That makes you strong if things go wrong
Well still get along somehow, living and growingtogether.
I wish it had included praying together. Fr. Patrick Peyton
was wise in coining this motto for the Family Rosary Crusade:
The Family that prays together stays together. Following this
wise motto, I would like to propose that the families that already
pray together integrate the reading of the Word of God into
their family prayer. It does not take much to do it; just a copy of
the MTBO Bible, a copy of this Daily Bible Reading Guide to
know which reading to choose for the day (any one of the three
readings: the first reading, the psalm, or the Gospel reading),
a member of the family to read it, another member to share a
personal reflection on ithow to live and proclaim it, and
another member to weave a prayer inspired by it.
The house Matthew 7:24 speaks about can also be understood as a household, a family. Making the reading, sharing,
and praying on the Word of God part of our family bonding is
like building a household on rock. We know well how often the
family is assailed by the storms of trials; and how easily it can
fall apart if it stands only on flimsy rituals of bondinglike being
built on sand. These bonding rituals are important, but they will
not be strong enough to be able to hold the family together in
stormy times. Like Joshua, we have to make a conscious
choice, in the midst of so many options, to serve God, and to
consciously make Gods Word a constitutive aspect of our
family bonding rituals.
I imagine the family members like beads in a rosary, linked
together by a chain, and that chain is Gods Word. If I may
revise the lyrics of the song, Id say, Pooling together, working
together, just praying together, that makes you strong if things
go wrong, well still get along somehow living and growing
together. The bond is made even stronger when the family
links up with the larger family of the Church on Sundays, breaking the Word together around the two tablesthe table of the
Word and the table of the Euchariston the strength of the
Lords own assurance that where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Mat 18:20)
In every family that is engaged in proclaiming and living the
Word of God together, Christ becomes truly present in our
midst, constantly building his Church on solid rock!
The next stage of the campaign, the Handwritten Unity Bible Project, designed to foster greater interest in Gods Word and raise
funds for MTBO Bibles was launched in September 2010.
Stories that show peoples hunger for the
Word and how the Bible is changing lives
A lesbian in Tondo decided to end her relationship with her female partner; a formerly
abusive husband in Marikina became a responsible head of the household, making sure
before he leaves the house for the day, that
there is money for food for the family. He also
stopped his drinking spree, became gentle in
his speech and even became a lay minister in
the parish; a father in Tondo experienced the
supernatural healing power of Gods Word
over his sons high grade fever and his problem with high blood. In Pagadian, the eyes of
a group of parishioners were opened to the
importance of maintaining ecological balance.
As a result, they began lobbying against
unscrupulous mining practices..
The Bible is the Word of God. It will guide people
towards a blessed and peaceful life. Give now and
help change lives and communities. Please fill up
the Response Form and return it to us today.
May God bless you for your prayers and for helping
proclaim the Word that shall not pass away.
