Learning Objective: Using visual materials the students will demonstrate an understanding of the Civil War in SC, the blockade of Charleston, and the H.L. Hunley with 80% accuracy. Alignment with Standards: Standard 3-4: The students will demonstrate an understanding of life in the antebellum period, the causes and effects of the Civil War, and the impact of Reconstruction in South Carolina. Indicator 3-4.4: Summarize the course of the Civil War in South Carolina, including the Secession Convention, the firing on Fort Sumter, the Union blockade of Charleston, the significance of the Hunley submarine, the exploits of Robert Smalls; and General William T. Shermans march through the State. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: The students have already studies wars and battles through U.S. History so they understand what usually goes on in wartimes. I will introduce the Civil War that took place in South Carolina so they can have a background knowledge of the state they live in. This standard will also prepare them for the more detailed standards in future grades. Assessments of the Objective: Lesson Objective Using visual materials the students will demonstrate an understanding of the Civil War in SC, the blockade of Charleston, and the H.L. Hunley with 80% accuracy. Assessment of the Objective Pre- I will review the lesson that was taught previously on the Confederacy and Fort Sumter by simply asking what they know about what happened at Fort Sumer and why it is important. I will check for understanding of the subject. During- I will continually ask the review questions that the 3rd grade social studies have after each section. I will ask for verbal responses so I can observe who understands the material. At the end of the chapter there are three review questions I will have the students write on a loose piece of paper to turn in. Post- After the lesson about Use of Formative Assessment I will have to go back and reteach the previous lesson if I observe that the students do not understand my pre assessment questions. The review questions will allow me to see if the students are grasping the concept or if I need to approach the lesson a different way. The post assessment handout will tell me if I need to go back and reteach the lesson another day or maybe do more hands-on activities.

the H.L. Hunley the students will complete a handout that will cover the Civil War and mainly the Hunley submarine. I will go around the classroom to see how the students are answering the questions. We will go over the handout to make sure they have the right answers. Accommodations: The class will work through the majority of the lesson together so the slower pace students will be guided by my teaching and the students responses. While the students work individually on the post assessment handout I will read the questions aloud to one of my resource students that have difficulty reading. I will ask students to move to where they can see the video and book. Materials: YouTube video on H.L. Hunley, The Story of the H.L. Hunley and Queenies Coin by Fran Hawk, Social Studies textbook, Handouts Procedures: Probing Question: What were the major effects of the Civil War on both the Union and Confederate sides? Connection: I will review the previous lesson about the Confederacy and Fort Sumter. I will ask the students what they know about the Union and the Confederacy. Teach: 1. I will have the students get out their social studies book and turn to the appropriate pages for the lesson. 2. I will read and discuss each section of the articles in the teachers edition social studies book. I will read over the side notes in the book and go into detail about the history, economics, and society effects of the Civil War. 3. I will ask the whole class the Review questions at the end of each section and observe which students are participating and understanding the material. 4. At the end of the reading I will ask the students to write and answer the study questions the book provides. The book asks questions such as how did the blockade of Charleston Harbor make life hard for Confederate soldiers, why did South Carolina fight a civil war, and why was the Emancipation Proclamation important. I will have the students write these down on a piece of paper to take up for assessment. 5. Next, I will play a video from YouTube about the H.L Hunley. The video will present an intense look at how historians think the Hunley sunk and what it did to make history. 6. I will be actively engaged throughout the video because I will read the captions as they appear on the screen. 7. After the video, I will ask the students what they found interesting about the video and ask them to name a few facts about the Hunley.

8. Next, I will introduce the book I am going to read titled The Story of the H.L. Hunley and Queenies Coin. The students will already have knowledge about the Hunley through the video and the social studies reading. 9. I will read the book aloud to the class and then ask them questions about the reading such as what were the generals names that played a big part in the submarine, how many people died trying to operate the Hunley, and whose side were the crew men on. 10. In the back of the book there are facts on the recovery of the H.L. Hunley. I will read and go over with the students what they did to prepare for the recovery of the Hunley. 11. The South Carolina Studies Weekly newspaper covers the Hunley so I will pass each student a copy for them to look over. I will read the main sections of the newspaper titled The H.L. Hunley, Why Build a Submarine?, and The Hunley Discovered! Now What?. 12. For the last post assessment I will give each student a handout that will cover the War Between States and the H.L. Hunley. The students will work on them individually and I will be walking around making sure that students are on task and answering any questions that the students may have. 13. When the students have completed their handout I will go over the answers to make sure they know the correct answers. Students will use their pens to mark whether they got the question correct or incorrect. Link: This lesson will link students with history of their own state. This lesson also links to may past and future lessons such as the history of slavery and many other battles that took place in South Carolina and the United States. Activity Analysis: Reading the material from the social studies textbook aloud with the class with allow the students to be on the same page and ask questions that more than one student may have. I will have a whole class discussion to get them engaged in conversation. My students love to watch videos in class so allowing them to watch an intense video about the H.L. Hunley will make the subject more attractive. I think the students will be interested in the facts that the book presents about the Hunley. I use the Smart board in order for the students to watch the video. References: Social Studies Textbook, Teacher Edition. (2008, July 14). The CSS Hunley, American Submarine. Youtube.
