Bradesco 1968 - Osasco - State of So Paulo

Captain Lamarca trains bank tellers.

On January 25 1969, Army captain Carlos Lamarca deserted from the 4th Infantry Regiment in Quitana (SP), where he served. With the help of a corporal and a soldier, he took rifles, machine guns, and bazookas with him and began his life in the guerrilla. He had received anti-guerrilla training in Ibina the previous year. An expert shooter, also in 1968, he was appointed as a shooting instructor for Bradesco employees. The bank wanted to defend its assets from armed robbers. Lamarca took advantage of the opportunity to train some of his own men. Six months after deserting, in July 1969, he commanded the assault on the safe of former Governor Adhemar de Barros, which had about 2.5 million Dollars in it. The following year, he started deploying a guerrilla post in the Ribeira Valley (state of So Paulo). After being discovered, he fled to Bahia, where he continued his attempts to install a guerrilla force in the field. On September 17 1971, Carlos Lamarca, with his body riddled with bullets, died in Pintada, in the city of Ipupiara (Backwoods of the state of Bahia). He was 33 years old. That was the end of Operation Pajussara, an initiative of the national security agencies who chased the guerrilla force for two years and eight months. In the previous month, Yara Yavelberg, a former psychology student and companion of Lamarca, died in Salvador under mysterious circumstances.
