Breanne Rowland Continuing Education Reflection

During one of my fieldwork experiences, I received sensitivity training on Alzheimers disease and participated in the Connections group for individuals with memory loss. The sensitivity training was based on understanding the world through the eyes of an individual with Alzheimers disease. This involved a brief discussion about neuro anatomy, activities and information about the changes that occur, frustrations that individuals encounter, and our ability to make a difference. I really enjoyed this training because it allowed me think about the experiences that individuals may encounter. One point that I felt was very important was individuals who have been diagnosed with Alzheimers have the desire to be live in the moment and make the most of the time they have left. Also, at the end of the training I received a certificate for continuing education for participating and completing the training. During this fieldwork experience, I also participated in the Connections program. The Connections group theme for this week centered on the meaning of Aloha. The individuals participated in an activity that revolved around naming three individuals whom they wanted to say Aloha to. The individuals were asked to share with the group. They also watched a video on the meaning of Aloha and the importance of the Aloha way. The group then read horoscopes. The individuals in the group appeared to have a wonderful time and enjoyed the social aspect of the group. They also seemed to enjoy sharing their thoughts with the group and learning about the meaning of Aloha.
