Lesson Introduction: The students will review names of different emotions. In our last lesson, we talked about many different examples of emotions that we feel. We learned that there are more emotions than just happy and mad. On the board I have a smiley face, a frowny face, and a question mark. I would like you to all write 3 emotions on a scrap piece of paper. We will go around the room and each person will share 1 of those 3 emotions. As a class, we will decide what your emotion will go under! Does it make you feel good, bad, or are you not sure? If all 3 of your emotions have already been said, thats okay! Just repeat one! Do intro activity

Great job! Today, we will practice explaining why we feel these emotions and locating where to go to help us with these emotions.

Lesson Procedure: Read The Way I Feel Talk about how explaining why we feel a certain way is important for good health. o Sometimes it seems easier to keep our emotions bottled up inside of us. But, you know what? It is much healthier to identify what emotions we are feeling and why we are feeling that way! Then, we can hopefully move past the emotion if it is a negative one or learn how we can feel that emotion more often if it is a positive emotion. Not only is it important to identify WHICH emotion we are feeling, but it is even more important to figure out WHY we are feeling that way. This is the root of what makes us feel emotions, so it is essential to our good health. Emotion Hat worksheet (with rubric) o Today, we are going to be putting our knowledge of different emotions to use. Each of you will pick one emotion. It can be good: it can be bad. It is your choice! It can be what youre feeling today, or you can make it up. Whatever you choose, just make sure that you can explain why you feel that way! Here are the worksheets we will be doing today. (Pass out Emotion Hat worksheets) Like I said, you will all pick and emotion and describe why you feel that way. Remember, try to be creative with your emotion choice. We just identified a lot of new emotions, so try not to use

the old boring ones. After you have written why you feel that emotion, it is time to decorate your hat! Make sure that the way the hat is decorated matches everything you have written on your worksheet! Different places can help with different emotions o Good job with your emotion hats everyone! Now, lets talk about what to do when we feel these different emotions that we have been talking about. Did you guys know that there are different people who we can talk to when we feel different ways? Sometimes, we need to go to a counselor and talk to them to help us get through a hard time. Going to someone for help is nothing to be ashamed of! I would much rather that we all talk to someone and get help to become happier than to live in sadness, wouldnt you? While it may be easy to identify where to go or who to talk to when were sad or upset, who do we go to when we are happy? Thats right! Sometimes we talk to our friends, sometimes we talk to our family, and sometimes we share our joy with strangers so that they may become happy, too! Our last activity today is to choose three different emotions that we have here on the board. It is up to you to decide where to go or who to talk to with each emotion that you choose, but I do want you to create some sort of map with it! For example, if I went to church when I was angry then I would draw a picture that reminds me of church, maybe a cross or a church building, and then write church alongside it. Then I would draw a dotted line to my next emotion and its location. I will be walking around the room and observing so feel free to ask as many

questions as you would like! If you dont finish today, it will be finished tonight at home for homework. Materials Needed: The Way I Feel book, emotion hat worksheet, markers, crayons, colored pencils

Extension Ideas: If students seem to be struggling with this activity, whether it be due to learning disabilities or just not understanding right away, there are measures that can be taken to ensure that learning will take place. The first thing you can do is simplify the word choice. Although the activity is to expand students knowledge and understanding of different emotions, some may struggle with the more complex words. It is more important that the students understand that emotions are felt in different circumstances and situations than it is to know the exact names of these emotions. If students have quickly mastered the learning goal, you can have them write a short narrative about a time that they intensely felt an emotion. It could be during a horrible time or a very wonderful time. Let the student decided, but ask for much detail and description. Assessment: As one of the formative assessments, the students will have completed the Emotion Hat worksheet. While this is graded, it is used to track how students are understanding the material and not to grade their final understanding. After quick looking over the worksheets, there could be a chance for some reteaching if students seem to not be mastering the learning goals.

o I have included a rubric for grading the Emotion Hat worksheet. The second formative that the students will be participating in will be creating the Location Map. The words that we have put on the board at the beginning of class will still be there. Using three of those words and their understanding of the lesson just taught, including where to go when youre feeling different emotions, the student will draw locations. Each location should match the emotion. For example, if you were feeling joyful, you would not put that at the hospital. However, do allow the students to have a little flexibility and creativity when locating where to go with each emotion. Just because it wouldnt be your first choice doesnt mean the student couldnt feel like going there. If the student does not finish the map during class time, it will be taken home for homework and due the next day. o This assessment will not have a rubric. The teacher will walk around the room while the students are working on these location maps to track their understanding.
