Sustainable Development Proposal

I.

Introduction Sustainable development is the fight to meet human needs, while still ensuring environmental stability (World Bank DEC). In order to accomplish what I aim to do, I would have to be working towards an environmental and philanthropist goal. In more simple terms, I will be working to help the environment and help the poor. However, this should have more attention, because nonrenewable resources are finite (George A. Nooten), children do not deserve to be burdened with poverty, and future generations should have a stable planet. This issue has many subsections, which will make this an especially challenging project to do. First, many people who have to endure poverty are children that cannot provide and fend for themselves. These children should not have to worry if their next meal will be set in front of them; they should be worrying about the next game that they will be playing with the neighborhood kids. Secondly, we cannot help people if there is no planet to be on. Therefore, it is crucial that we make the best of the resources that we have and allow the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Our Common Future, From One Earth to One World). My Capstone project will be addressing all four of the Global Leadership Performance Outcomes of Investigating the World, Recognizing Perspectives, Taking Action, and Communicating Ideas. Through Investigating the World, I will figure out how my global topic is locally focused, use international sources to analyze data, and develop a multi-purpose position that answers a global question. In terms of Recognizing Perspectives, I will be provide my perspective and others to see how different influences affect these perspectives. I will be recognizing the perspective of my audience to fulfill their needs, use verbal and nonverbal techniques to effectively communicate my ideas, and alter communication choices in response to its effectivity. Altogether I will be finding ways to strengthen the green efforts here at school and helping to provide for those in need in the community. Furthermore, it will not only allow for that type of action, but also taking action to inform our students that no matter how small the effort, one person can make a change.

Form My project will be in two forms. First, I will be working with Mr. Le and Juan Medina to involve the student body in achieving my set goal of helping the environment and the poor. Secondly, I will be typing a 6-8 page paper on all my experiences and insights that will only be for my fellow 6th period classmates. At the end, I will be having a presentation to showcase my experiences and fieldwork concerning my project with Juan to Mrs. Frank, the student body who attend such presentation and my sponsor.

V.

Preparation To complete this Capstone project I will need: My capstone binder Help from my sponsor, Mr. Le Help from my partner, Juan Medina Access to internet Help from students in the SIS Beautification club A flash drive A camera Connections to local organizations Time The greatest obstacle I will face will be getting all work done by the assigned deadlines with great quality. I also expect to have difficulty finding someone who will be committed enough to continue with the garden next year, either as a Capstone project or an extracurricular activity. However, the first step I will be taking into beginning my project will be getting my proposal approved by my sponsor so that we may begin setting up possible events addressing a part of the issue.
