Breanne Rowland Social Justice Final Reflection

Occupational therapy is aligned with many aspects of social justice. For one, the field is organized around creating greater access and accessibility to all. Therapist often advocate for their patients, aiding for better resources, care, and modalities that improve patients health and lifestyles. In addition to providing greater access and accessibility, it is critical that therapists are treating the patient holistically. In order to be effectual, consideration of a patients occupational profile is necessary. Patients culture, history, and capabilities are critical to providing the best care possible; an essential component of health equity. During my time spent at Touro, I have become more aware of social justice in the community and its relation to the field. I have become more aware of the different populations in our society that are oppressed, marginalized and stigmatized. I have learned that when working with populations that have historically been oppressed and marginalized, it is critical that a therapist be sensitive to the systematic issues that these individuals face. It is also essential that a therapist be culturally competent as a means to prevent alienating their clients. Trust is critical component and must be earned. As an occupational therapy student, I have learned that it is critical to address advocacy for these populations by focusing on culturally sensitive interventions, making healthcare accessible to all, and preventing and rehabilitating both the individual and community. Occupational therapists can focus on empowering individuals and their communities by emphasizing human rights and occupational justice. This would include providing community outreach and educational programs, anxiety management training, offering various skill

trainings, and working with policy makers and law enforcement in order to advocate for the populations who are oppressed.
