Grade: 5th grade general music Title: Breakfast menu item lesson

Musical Focus: concepts/skills to emphasize Singing Melody Rhythm Harmony Timbre Form Movement Creating Playing instruments Expressive Qualities

Preparation: (lead-in/hook/preparatory set/link to prior knowledge) Students will learn R.U. rhythmic lesson. Teacher and students will go through each of the rhythmic patterns components. Teaching Sequence: Teacher and students will go through each of the components of the huckleberry song Tea- Quarter note Pie &- Eight notes Huckleberry- Sixteenth notes (Optional part: Have students come to the board and arrange the 4 breakfast menu items). Class can say/clap the rhythms together. Do 3 rounds so students become comfortable with task. When students are comfortable, students will then reassign the breakfast menu items to the huckleberry words. Students will learn all words to Breakfast menu items ( Jam, OJ, PB, Blueberry, Marmalade, Bacon&) Teacher and students will go through each of the sounds and have students echo them on instruments. Given a worksheet students will participate in a short dictation to see how well they understand each of the breakfast menu items. In large groups students will use a matrix to create a rhythmic pattern using their breakfast menu items.

Culmination: (consolidation of lesson) Ss will eventually create rondo form using the breakfast menu items.

Notes/Extension: There are a couple of games students can play to assess how well students can incorporate rhythm while keeping a steady beat. When students are really comfortable with breakfast menu items teacher can play game with students that challenge their ability to dictate, keep steady beat and work as a group. In telephone dictation game, part of the students are the operator, telephone-cord, and we have receivers at the end that will write down the pattern that was sent through the telephone chord. Students can play this for points or can play this as a continuous game. Student can also play, breakfast dictation showdown where the students are improvising small rhythms on the spot. Students can stand in a circle, and imitating the game of hesitation. 1 student will be beat giver, and students will go around in a circle, saying a rhythm of 2 breakfast menu items. The next person to their right has to keep one and change one. If they hesitate to say a rhythm or repeat the rhythm of the previous partner the students have to step out of the group and become beat keeper.
