A Lesson Plan in English

I. Objectives Through the use of a short story, with 85% accuracy the students are expected to: 1. Identify the five important elements of a short story 2. Discuss the elements of the short story using story grammar 3. Share their experiences in reading a short story and get the significance of the story theyve read and the given selection 4. Write a reflective essay about the story II. Subject Matter Topic: A Short Story Entitled The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant Reference: http://americanliterature.com/author/guy-demaupassant/short-story/the-necklace Materials: handouts, graphic organizer III. Procedure Teachers Activities A. Vocabulary Development Before advancing to our topic, let us first unlock the difficult words that will be present in the selection. B. Motivation The students will be asked to share about a memorable story they have read and the moral lesson they have learned out of that particular story. C. Presentation of the Material The students will be asked if they have read the story entitled The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. The students will be provided a copy of the short story. Before reading the story, Ill give them the basic elements of the short story Ill tell them that they will identify the elements later on our discussion. Elements of a Short Story 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. D. Discussion
Given the guide questions, the students will be asked to answer each item. Who are the main characters of the story? The main characters of the story are Madame Mathilde Loisel,

Monsieur Loisel, and Madame Jeanne Forrestier What is the setting of the story? The setting was in 18th century France.

What is the storys plot? Exposition Learning about Madame and Monsieur Loisel and their background Rising action Receiving an invitation to the ball, buys a dress and borrows the necklace, has a wonderful time at the ball. Climax Discovers the loss of the necklace, looks everywhere and cannot find it.

Falling action They buy a matching replacement and spend 10 years paying it off.
Resolution Madame Loisel comes clean to Madame Forrestier and finds out that the necklace was a fake. What is the conflict of the story? The conflict of the story was Madame Loisels discontentment with everything her husband provides and her problem on attending the ball without a new gown and jewelry. The theme of the story is ones discontentment of wealth, appearance and being humble.

What is the central idea or the theme of the story?

E. Generalization The students will be asked of what is the significance of the story to them.

The story serves as a reminder for people to be content on what God has given them and that appearance does not define ones character and whole being. Furthermore people must remain humble despite of their status in a society.

F. Application The students will be given an activity. They will be grouped into four and they will be tasked to analyze the given selection through the use of a story grammar. A story grammar is a graphic organizer that presents the outline of the story. Here is how it looks (see Figure 1). The students will be given 5-7 minutes to supply each item and 3 more minutes to prepare their presentation.

IV. Evaluation The students will be given an identification test. Instructions: Identify the following items based on the descriptions given. 1. The author of the selection 2. the main characters 3. The central idea of the story 4. The conflict of the story 5. the resolution of the story 6. the message of the story 7. what jewelry was lost 8. the owner of the jewelry 9. the personality of Madame Loisel 10.the personality of Monsieur Loisel V. Assignment In a one-half sheet of paper, write a reflective essay about the story The Necklace.
