Where Are We Today?

E-enabled Scope Established and Case Approved
CX will retrofit 177 aircraft with a common e- enabled architecture A320/321, A330, A340, B777-200/300/ER, B747ERF, B747-8
First Fleet (777) in the final stages of STC approval First install Q1 2014 Second Fleet (A330) surveys complete Applications testing in October Ground Infrastructure in place Detailed business process change preparation ongoing

Hardware and Software Applications

Installation
Class 3 certified EFB installation but intended for Type A and B software use only Avoids software certification costs and lead time.

Communications
Iridium (replaces Inmarsat significant weight and drag saving) VHF/HF/ACARS 3G Terminal Wireless Thumb Drive

Why Does Commonality Matter?

Fleet Commonality Common Hardware, Software Applications, and Ground Infrastructure
Apps development, management, testing, deployment Business Integration (the benefits reason for e-enablement) Training, user familiarity

Cost Effectiveness On Aircraft Equipment

Less devices to purchase, manage, upgrade, lose Avionic Grade Performance and Reliability Economies of Scale purchase of non OEM BFE equipment Spares holding

New Challenges to Avoid

Effort for IT and Business Departments
Multiple suppliers on separate development cycles Difficulty managing configurations across multiple a/c types with multiple release standards and not always connected. Suppliers unaware of each others integration requirements Interfaces stop working Not my Fault its their fault disputes A new generation of Enterprise Debt

Loss of Business Benefit

Workarounds started Fallback to Paper Data Integrity Benefits degraded Loss of User Confidence

Looking Forward?
Operational Processes will have changed thats the benefit
Consider: When we have been e-enabled for a some years
Data entry clerks no longer in place Flight Deck documents no longer produced No longer distributed No vehicles Dispatch staff and premises downsized Old processes becoming forgotten Old Equipment de-commissioned

We will become reliant on our e-enabled world it will be normal

Large scale Fall Back and Recovery may not be practical

Transition Period

Other Options why not?

Personal issue iPads Class 1 only using 3G ground connectivity only
Considered viable for Flight Crew manuals and Charts Application management issues expected for large device numbers Not tail specific and not available without crew present on flight deck e.g. not usable for e-tech log / cabin log Comparatively expensive given limited function Needs an a/c network to extend use for airborne connectivity

Boeing / Airbus Solutions Do not (did not) meet CX design goal - mainly Flight Crew focussed
Not available on all types not common with retrofit options Multiple ground system architecture required Reliance on Boeing / Airbus supplied applications Concerns about NFS / ONS single point failure / Obsolescence

A350 under review with Airbus (supportive) 787 unknown by CX - both types will require different ground infrastructure - high risk of bespoke processes / limitations

The systems that we rely on for Operational Management and Customer Service are updated From hours to months after the a/c has departed
Data entry timeline

The Line Operation runs on:

Paper, Phones, Radios Telexes, Walking, Driving, email.
Over decades, we have highly optimised inefficient process with an industry of people, paper and workarounds

Hours Days

Weeks

Month +

CX runs an industry of: Paper production, collection, data entry, shipping and storage

Airport Congestion Increased labour number and salaries Reduced utilisation Reduced service levels
What has worked in the past will not work in the future

An e-enabled fleet is the best Platform for Innovation and Change that we can give our people in order for them to cope with the external factors affecting our business NOW If not, then what is plan B?

Connectivity

Iridium Satcom
Iridium satcom provides an always on line of communication between the aircraft and the ground. It is restricted to narrow band operational data.

GateLink WiFI

USB

Cellular (4G/ 3G/H+/2G)

Cellular will be available through the aircraft TWLU and directly from applicable tablet devices. A service provider has not been selected.

ARINC will be providing Gatelink WiFi in our home port (HKG) at all gates and stands. Gatelink WiFi provides broadband connectivity and speeds for all data.

USB Stick will be available for bulk data upload/download. It provides a backup where wireless communications is not feasible or available.

Communication Channels are key
