MAGAZINE COLLAGES
BIG IDEA & RATIONALE As the first project, students will begin to learn some key concepts of art and design. In this first project, the students will have to act as solution-finders in that I am presenting them a task, goal and they must find a solution to this mission. By challenging the students, giving them goals to reach, they will be practicing an essential 21st Century Learning skill they will use in their developing lives. Another overarching theme for this class is the 21st Century Learning skill of persistence. This project will challenge students to keep going even when they want to quit or are tired of the effort. Just like in their upcoming professional lives, they will gain the skill of working hard until the completion of a project- even if it takes longer then liked. This project is very open-ended, acting as a way for me to see what my students are interested in, as well as to gage their creativity. Students will also have a choice in the kind of collage they create. A few examples are portraits (self/others/animals), Landscapes/cityscapes, and Abstract (surrealism). To begin this task, we will look at artists who specialize in using collage as a fine art form. We will also look at the above art topics to spark inspiration for their piece. ENDURING KEY CONCEPTS 1. Students will have to become solution-finders before they can successfully complete the project. 2. The skill of persistence will also be learning, as students need to keep going in their art. 3. Students will reference their draft throughout the entire project. STATE STANDARDS & BENCHMARKS ASSESSMENT FORMATIVE & SUMMATIVE Formative 1. Participation: students will be given a daily grade according to how well they are focused on the project at hand. Students who work the entire hour will be rewarded with a good grade, verses students who waste their class-time.

2. Inspiration: Students will be required to have a draft/image to work from. This will be a part of the overall project grade, included on the rubric. Summative 1. The overall project will be graded on completeness, neatness, craftsmanship, and creativity.
