Word from the Chairman
Im proud to report that 2013 was a historic year for tourism in Qatar,
during which the total number of visitors rose by 10% from 1.2 million
in 2012 to 1.32 million last year. As a recovering global economy and
an inux of companies supporting Qatars infrastructure development
drove the tourism sector forward, both business and leisure tourism
saw healthy growth. The GCC remains the primary inbound market,
crossing one million visitors for the rst time ever to register a rise of
14.4%. Europe and Asia too are proving to be fast-growing markets
for Qatars tourism sector, with a net increase of 9% in international
visitors.
Qatar Tourism Authority oversaw the introduction of a range of
events and activities during the year, which have had a noticeable
impact on tourism. In the leisure sector, the Eid Festival attracted
more than 140,000 visitors from across the GCC. A growing number
of other festivals, international performances, exhibitions and
sporting events drew a steady stream of tourists, in addition to allowing Qataris to reap the benets of a
rich and diverse tourism sector in their country.
Focus on Developing the Tourism Sector
On the business front, the rst phase of QTAs agreement with the United Nations World Tourism
Organization to develop the policies, regulations and strategies to consolidate Qatars nascent tourism
sector has come to an end and phase two has already been signed. QTA also opened its second
representative ofce in Europe, with more planned in key markets around the world. In the meantime,
QTA remains an active participant in all major international trade shows and events.
Concentrated efforts are underway to promote synergistic partnerships between the public sector and
the private sector as well as between various public sector entities of Qatar. By capitalising on unique
opportunities to ll gaps in the market, a range of new products, services and tourism experiences are

hotel apartments opened for operation when several landmark hotel properties were closed for substantial renovation.
While there are some changes in the market demands for rooms in Qatar, all indicators show a sustained growth in industry
with hotels posting an average of 65% occupancy, up from 60% in 2012, despite an overall increase in room inventory.
Average hotel room rates fell in Quarter 4 of 2013 against the same period in 2012 due to the COP18 event held in December 2012, inating rates and occupancy.
However, rates are also responding to demand changes in the light of successive increases in room rates in each quarter over the year. Average Room Rates for the
year remained strong, as the below statistics indicate.

The average Revenue Per Ava||ab|e Room (RevPAR} for 4 & 5 Star Hote|s |noreased by 7.1%, |noreas|ng from OR 372.40 to OR 398.85.
The average Tota| Revenue Per Ava||ab|e Room (TRevPAR} for 4 & 5 Star Hote|s |noreased by 8.1% from 773.90 |n 2012 to OR 837.08.

in the process of being created with the support of QTA. This strategy of collaboration with industry
partners is an important initiative in developing the sector.
During the year we completed the MICE strategy, in collaboration with stakeholders, to build upon the
existing successful meetings, incentives, conferences and events sector in Qatar. Additionally, we
nalized the marketing strategy to promote Qatar as a destination, particularly in key markets worldwide.
These strategies will contribute to the continued development of the sector as identied in the Qatar
Nat|ona| Tour|sm Seotor Strategy 2030.
Results Tell the Story
QTAs efforts are already bearing fruit for the tourism sector in the country. In 2013, overall hotel revenues
reaohed OAR 3.58 b||||on, up by 13% from the prev|ous year. 4 and 5 star room oooupanoy was up by
5% even as new propert|es oame on the market. A further 124 hote|s and hote| apartments are ourrent|y
being developed to cater to even higher number of visitors in the years ahead.
Another reoent m||estone was the |aunoh of the new Nat|ona| Tour|sm Seotor Strategy 2030 |n February
2014. Formulated as the roadmap for the development of the industry in the coming decades, it will
guide QTAs plans and policies towards making Qatar a world-class destination with deep cultural roots.
The construction of the Doha Exhibition and Conference Centre is in full swing and Hamad International
Airport is set for a 2014 opening. QTA is also working on a host of initiatives to continue developing the
seotor and enoourag|ng SME`s and entrepreneurs to |nvest |n the |ndustry.
The Path Ahead

million annual visitors to our shores by 2030. Our journey towards delivering a high-quality tourism
experience in a sustainable manner continues in 2014 and beyond.
