INTRODUCTION I first began making beats with FL Studio at 14. Then it was Fruityloops. It was very awkward. When Fruityloops !ame out" I got it and began e#perimenting with it. It was a

dream !ome true to me that making beats was so !onvenient and easy. I didn$t need keyboards and a studio. %ll I needed was to download some software and began !reating. When Fruityloops & !ame out" I began to take my !raft seriously. I probably spent my entire 'th grade summer figuring out Fruityloops. I learned how to sample on my own using samples from ()ave *ou Seen )er+ by the Stylisti!s. I re!eived instant attention be!ause no one knew about Fruityloops and I was !oming up ,ui!kly learning how to make beats.

This year will be 1- years in the making. I will not hesitate to show you everything .useful/ I have learned over the last 1- years. I know you do not have time to read the entire 012ook at on!e. I re!ommend using this e1book as a referen!e in !ase you want to instantly to a !ertain thing. *ou are learning from the best.

Lesson 1: The Basics of FL Studio FL Studio is the simplest yet most powerful beat1making software in the history of musi!. If you do not know how to make a simple beat on FL Studio" I suggest you do some tutorials on *ouTube. This e1book instru!ts individuals on how to do more with FL Studio. I will give a few tips on what to do and what not to do on FL Studio. 1./ Dever ever use SimSynth" 3rumSynth" FL Eeys" or Wasp. They are very low ,uality sounds and will instantly turn away a !ustomer. ./ )igh1,uality drum sounds are keys to su!!ess. When you download a drumkit" go through it and pi!k out the high1,uality drums and delete the rest. &./ 7ersonali;e your FL Studio with a !ustom ba!kground and a personali;ed browser. .9o to >hapter : for more info./ This will help get you in the mood to make a beat.

4./ 6nderstand that I work with very high tempos. If you normally make beats around <-1 1-- beats per minute then take my tempo and divide it by . 8./ 7ra!ti!e makes perfe!t. 0ven with all the e1books if you don$t devote time and effort into your !raft" you are going to su!k.

For the sake of time" I will only tell about the effe!t that I find useful. '(UO H This is a 0B plugin. There is a built in meter to show you how the sample is already 0B$d. %lways remember the low bass part of the sample is to the left and the high treble is to the right. The middle is mid. For instan!e if it is a sample with an unneeded hi hat" take the right side of the 0B6G down. F)uit* Cho)us H This is a good effe!t with s,uare synths. 3o not use this too often. It !an !heese up your beat. F)uit* Com )esso) H Cery 9ood For 2ass 9uitars. 9ood For Co!als. Dot very good for anything else. It looks kind of !ompli!ated and trust me" it is. Iust remember that the threshold is the level where the bass" mid and treble will meet. The gain is how loud the sample will go after it is !ompressed by the threshold. The ratio is how strong the threshold is. The atta!k is how ,ui!kly the threshold rea!ts. =elease is how ,ui!kly the threshold releases. *eah" >ompli!atedJ Eind of useful for skilled 0B$ers. F)uit* Dela* 2 H This !reates e!hoes. The main knob you want to pay attention to is time. When *ou move it" it will be a time indi!ator in the upper right1hand !orner. Setting the time indi!ator to 5--" 45--" '5-- or 1:5-- will take you a long way in your rap produ!tion !areer.

F)uit* Flan!e) H This is fun if you have a little 3I in you" or you want to Fust add a !ool but sort of silent effe!t to your sample or beat. This !reates the effe!t of two samples running slightly offtune to !reate a windy1like passing effe!t. F)uit* Flan!us H I don$t know why they invented this one. Its sort of !heesy. 2ut it !an do DAMNMAYNEBEATS.COM PRESENTS COME BE A FL STUDIO EXPERT FL STUDIO TUTORIAL E-BOOK 9

It !an filter out bass" filter out treble or filter out mid. Low pass only plays everything below where the F=0B knob is set. 2and pass plays where the F=0B knob is set and )igh pass only plays above where the F=0B knob is set. >onfusing? Look if you need some advi!e" if you want to ta+e the bass out of a sam le, set it to high pass and the F=0B to maybe 4-- through :--. If you need to ta+e the t)eble out of a sam le" set it to low pass and the F=0B to --- through 8---. F)uit* Lo-e .hilte) / I re!ommend Fust using presets with this one.

This makes your sample sound as if it was in a empty hallway or empty room. I sometimes use it on >laps as a breakdown snare or with strings. 3ont overuse it. The knob" =0C0=2" is the only knob that is worth moving. The higher the per!entage" the louder the reverb. F)uit* Ree-e)b 2 / It adds some sort of room graph whi!h isn$t very useful with rap musi!. It may be useful with a movie soundtra!k. F)uit* Sc)atche) / Cery hard and Cery Lame >ompared to the Wave Traveller .3is!ussed with (9enerators+ in Lesson 8/. Lesson 7: Usin! the .la*list First" I am going to let you know that I normally make tra!ks between 1 - and 1@- beats per minute. I also use :4 steps on my step se,uen!er. This affe!ts length on the playlist.

Lesson 16: More on Effects (Changing, Evolving Effects) ! received a uestion in my &ouTube email. This guy was asking about how to do effects and he was watching a video and some guy had loaded up a video. The video had colorful things in the playlist editor and the beat was doing all kinds of effects. ! don't do too many effects because they can cheese up your beat. (ut ! will e)plain what he did. First thing you must remember is that when dealing with the event editor* all different events can be on different patterns. Now play the song and you will notice that all these do allow you to automate the increase of an effect. ! don't do this often. &ou can do this with whatever effect you like. The video ! was referring to had longer effects. &ou can make your automated effects as long as possible. This is very time consuming.
