Lesson Planning Template

A template that blends Understanding by Design with Universal Designs for Learning

Stage 1 Desired Results Established Student Learning Goals for the Lesson (PLOs): - compare familiar constellations in seasonal skies PDP Goals for the Lesson: - That articulates the content, methods and institutional arrangements that are relevant, worthwhile and appropriate for the education of children Connection to / or Activation of Students will Walk out With: Students will knowthat we see different Background Knowledge:
First constellation lesson Did you know? daily fact on board outside classroom (have been about constellations for the past week)

constellations throughout the year Students will understandhow to use charts to track which constellations can be seen when Students will be able tobetter visualize constellations

Informal Checks for Understanding

Discussion/asking questions, seeing how students are answering Engagement Are students on task?

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Formal Checks for Summative Assessment Understanding

Not in this lesson, will come later Exit ticket

Stage 3 Learning Plan Processing / Learning Activities Designed to Ensure Understanding and Promote Critical Thinking:

Potential Barriers to Success:

Students may have trouble visualizing constellation chart will show how to use it as well as my constellation chart. Students will also create their own constellation chart they will practice using in next lesson Students engagement may wane as they are not as focused in the afternoon can provide them with a stretch/brain break if needed. Having a lesson that involves cutting vs just talking the whole time should help as well. Breaks up the lesson Students may not remember anything from last lesson as it was a week ago can give them prompts, the Daily Did You Know? should help as well. Did You Know for todays lesson will be review of what was most important take-away from last lesson. Some students may be in LST/away will have to catch them up a different day (maybe work with them at recess/during silent reading?) Some students may always want to answer questions during lesson can get them to write an I learned statement for wonder wall instead of answering orally

The following is a sample organizer. Time Lessons Order of Events 5 mins Introduce Lesson

Pedagogical explanation/justification Doesnt leave them guessing, provides structure to lesson. Also recaps what weve done so far Promotes curiosity about constellations, differentiates for students who always want to answer questions/have many questions

5 mins

Introduce Constellation Wonder Wall

5 mins

Mark Homework

Pre-Assessment: what do students know? What should I go over again? What did they misunderstand?

15 mins

Transition into charts by talking about how constellations move use chart and explain how it works. Get student volunteers to tell what constellations they can see on their birthdays

Provides students with visuals on what constellations look like (and different constellations). Will help ensure that they have necessary initial understanding Will, again, provide visual of how constellations move throughout the year Will help students for when they make their own charts, help them understand why we use the charts/how they can be helpful

15 mins

Explain how they will make their own charts. Hand out 2 sheets for chart and scissors to each student Check for understanding and walk around while theyre working, providing instruction/prompting/assistance when necessary - Help students staple charts to construction paper if they finish Wrap up lesson by explaining that they will be using these charts next lesson Exit ticket: students write what constellations they can see on their birthday on wall

Demonstrate/model for students who need visual examples, will help mitigate later confusion/allow me to help students during work period Allows students to begin activity Make sure students are on task/help students who dont understand task/provide feedback Gives them further significance of why they are making charts Assessment of whether or not students can use chart

Total: 45 minutes

Homework/Preparations for next class: Depending on how close they are/how many students finish making their charts, may get the remaining few to finish theirs for homework. If its most of the class though, well allot some time at the beginning of the next science lesson. Im anticipating that because I know their cutting skills are not always top notch, especially when cutting circles.
