FISCAL OBLIGATIONS OF THE PATRIARCHATE of pe IN THE TIME

OF PATRIARCH KALLINIKOS I (16911710)

SUMMARY: In the period from the end of the fifteenth to the early twentieth century,
old Christian custom of supporting clergy by giving alms and paying religious rites in
cash was interpreted by the Turkish authorities as a form of economic exploitation of state
resources. This interpretation became the legal basis for taxation of the Orthodox and
Monophysite autocephalous churches in Ottoman territory as commercial entities. Fiscal
authorities registered all the autocephalous archbishoprics as separate fiscal units the
patriarchates, and their incomes were formally issued to the patriarchs in annual rent.
The archbishops of Pe and patriarchs of all the Serbs and the Bulgarians from the midsixteenth century until 1766 in Turkish sources were mentioned as tenants of the tax unit
of the Patriarchate of Pe (pek Patriklii). The state authorities allowed them to conduct
religious services on condition that they regularly paid annual rent kesim, and had a valid
decree of appointment berat. The annual tax of the Serbian Patriarchate till 1690 was
fixed at 100,000 aspers, the same as the fee (peke) for issuing of the berat. The existence
of the autocephalous archbishoprics in the Ottoman state depended on the ability of their
hierarchy to settle these obligations. According to Ottoman tax registers, Serbian Patriarch
Kallinikos I (16911710), for these taxes paid to the treasury 5,482 sequins or weight of
19.19 kg of fine gold (23.5 k).

SUMMARY : The question of education of Orthodox children in Gradika regiment
arose in the mid-18th century with the request for renewal of Dejanovac monastery as a
kind of educational centre in this regiment. Such application was submitted first to the
bishop of Pakrac in December 1753 by regimental officers, and soon they were joined
by the representatives of borderline Orthodox villages around Okuani. State authorities

were examining this application at the end of 1756 and during the first half of the 1757 by
organizing commissions for research in the field. The final decision was negative and, apart
from the conclusion that the monastery had never existed, it was helped by the fact that, in
the meantime, a public school was opened at the headquarters of Nova Gradika. However,
in addition to the school at the headquarters, due to the efforts of Gradika regiment
Orthodox officers led by then major, later colonel Jovan Miljevi, a peoples school was
established in the same town and it was independent from the church and state authorities.

MILAN URINS VIEWS OF NATIONAL QUESTION IN YUGOSLAVIA

SUMMARY: The decade 19291939 was not a good period for resolving national
question in Yugoslavia. Milan urin tried to find a solution on the pages of New Europe.
In the first decade of Yugoslav state urin was an integral Yugoslav. He believed in the
Yugoslav idea and its future. He believed that Serbs and Croats were one nation, and
together with Slovenes members of a greater Yugoslav nation. urin also believed at that
time that Serbs were guilty for national problems in Yugoslavia. In the fourth decade of XX
century, however, Milan urin changed his views of the national question in Yugoslavia.
He still believed that Serbs and Croats are one nation, but he did not see equality in
Yugoslavia any more. In his opinion, Slovenes were just good Yugoslav citizens, but they
did not have any right to interfere with Serb-Croat relations, because Serbs and Croats
were the most important nations in Yugoslavia. Milan urin revealed many evidenced
that Serbs and Croats were one nation. It is paradoxical that urin declined the idea of
integral Yugoslav nation, and changed his attitude towards Serb-Croat option, just because
of saving Yugoslavia! Day after day he continuously repeated his thesis about unity of Serbs
and Croats, in order to prevent bigger problems in really hard times of Yugoslav history.
Unfortunately, his idea failed and Serbs and Croats started conflicts with the consequences
that can be felt even today.

THE OPERATION OF RADIO STATION KARAORE IN JERUSALEM

SUMMARY: The operation of radio station Karaore in Jerusalem, which worked
under British control, was influenced by Yugoslav internal conflicts (Chetniks - Partisans).
For the same reason, the British due to the international relations with the Soviet Union
banned the news on radio station Free Yugoslavia. It was the Partisans-Chetniks conflict
that made the British suspend the operation of this radio station because of, as they put it,
complex and confusing situation in Yugoslavia, seeking a broader, Yugoslav approach.
Mihailovis intemperate speech in Lipovo village near Kolain (28 February 1943) that
the British Colonel Bailey (William Bailey) reported about, the suspension of the radio
station (27 March 1943) and the suspension of the Yugoslav Military programme on the
Radio London (the end of April 1943) were the obvious manifestations of British attitude
towards the Yugoslav royal government and its minister, General Draa Mihailovi. As an
example of historical irony, radio station Karaore ceased to exist on 27 March 1943, on
the same date when two years before (1941) the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill
declared: Early this morning the Yugoslav nation found its soul.

ATTITUDES OF YUGOSLAV COMMUNISTS TO NATIONAL AGREEMENT

AND
THE BANOVINA OF CROATIA, 19391941.

SUMMARY: In the interwar period, the leaders of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia
payed a particular attention to the Croat Question, which was seen as a fundamental and
indispensable starting point in solving national problems within the Kingdom of Serbs,
Croats and Slovenes/Yugoslavia. At the same time, among the members of the Yugoslav
labor movement, especially the Croat Communists, there was a consistent awareness of
possible cooperation with the Croatian Republican Peasant Party/Croatian Peasant Party,
while its leaders Stjepan Radi and Vlatko Maek were respected as leaders of the
whole Croatian nation.
In the opinion of the Yugoslav communists, the creation of the Banovina of Croatia,
after the agreement of 26 August 1939 between Vlatko Maek and Yugoslav primeminister Dragia Cvetkovi, met the prerequisites for the further democratization of the
common state. However, even during the second half of the 1939 certain doubts emerged
regarding the legislative activities of the authorities of Banovina in the first place. Their
discontent the Communists justified with the broken promises of Croatian politicians, lack
of democracy, anti-communist attitudes of the Banovina of Croatia authorities, cooperation
of the representatives of Croatian Peasant Party with the Yugoslav regime and so on. On
the eve of the April war 1941, the Communist Party leaders regarded the Cvetkovi-Maek
Agreement as an act of dividing Yugoslavia between two types of the bourgeoisie.

la dicta mia fiola alla debita eta, se li mei fratelli vorano, la debiano maritar per
Paulo, fiolo del mio marito dela sua prima uxor. Alla qual mia fiola lasso tuto
quallo che lo de mia rasone in casa de mio padre. Et de piu li lasso quatro veste
mie le quale sono qui, zoe due da rossa dalmatina, una celestre et una pauonaza,
et due de panno, una fornita de perle menute et una schieta, ambe due pauonaze.

SUMMARY: The last will of Mrs Klara was composed on 20 August 1519. Soon
after that Klara died. Her testament was opened on 1 September the same year by the
consul of the Republic of Dubrovnik, judges and witnesses who had seen its registration.
The will is the only known historical source which proves the existence of Mrs Klara,
thus we know almost nothing about her. Her father was Ivan Ivanievi from Poljica. She
had brothers who lived in Poljic, probably in the family house. Klara got married twice.
From the marriage with her first husband (still nameless to the history) she had a daughter
Ana. The second time she married the Duke of Hum, Petar Pavlovi, with whom she had
no children. From the will we learnt that marriage with Klara was not the first one of Duke
Petar from a previous marriage he had a son, named Pavle.

SUMMARY: Lyceum, as the supreme educational institution in the Principality of
Serbia, was established in 1838 in Kragujevac and relocated to Belgrade in 1841. Education
consisted of philosophy and law courses, each lasting for two years. Lyceum library was
formally founded in 1844, by the Law on Public Education. A full list of books, periodicals,
manuscripts and other materials owned by the library was conveyed to the State Audit
Institution in January 1846, on its request. That list is presented and analyzed in this paper.
The library possessed 469 books (including multi-volume publications), 22 magazines,
journals and calendars, 10 manuscripts, 3 collections of newspapers, 3 paintings, 2 maps,
a collection of ancient coins and some geological materials. There were 25 duplicates
among the books and 2 among the journals. Most of the publications were published in
Serbian (39,7%), German (22,7%) and Latin (13,8%) language. Library collection was
created mainly by individual donations. There were 29 donors in total (27 individuals and
2 government institutions). Lyceum itself purchased 21 book, using funds donated by
various individuals. The main donors were: Janko afarik, a professor at Lyceum; ura
Milutinovi, a blind bookseller; Vukain Radii, a Greek language teacher; Milo Popovi,
a newspaper editor and a journalist; Konstantin Brankovi, a professor at Lyceum; Stefan
Lazarevi, a bookstore keeper; Jovan Steji, a medic and a writer; Dimitrije Mati, a private
company employee at the time and a former Lyceum student; Svetozar Jovanovi, second
year student at Lyceum; Milosav Jovanovi, a lower-ranking government clerk; Sergije
Nikoli, a professor at Lyceum and Nikola Leta, an innkeeper. Since most of the books
in the library have been donated by these people, their short biographies are included in
the paper. Theme structure of the library collection is statisticly analyzed and it shows
that only 7,3% of its content reffered to philosophy and law, 13,8% to history and the
rest to other various subjects. Therefore, it can be said that the library collection was a
meere improvization, due to the manner of its becoming. However, bearing in mind the
situation in Serbia in that period of its history when literacy was an exception, it can be
concluded that the library, thanks to the enthusiasm of particular individuals, had gained
solid foundation for its further development.

SUMMARY: Book of Holm Sundhaussen History of Serbia from 19th to 21st century
appeared in 2009 in Serbian translation, and its provocative nature immediately drew great
attention of the scientific community. Soon after its publication eminent Serbian historians
(Vasilije Kresti, ore Stankovi, Rado Ljui, Slavenko Terzi, Milo Kovi and others)
wrote a series of critical reviews and assessments in scientific periodicals, but also in the
daily and periodical newspapers and magazines. In this paper, we analyze their views
on the book of Sundhaussen, with intention to determine how modern Serbian science
responds to historiographical production of our time, written by Western researchers
specialized in South-Eastern Europe, and how it interpret their understanding of modern
Serbian state history.
