4 08 April 2014 Claudius Soliloquy At the beginning of the play Claudius strikes us an intelligent and capable ruler. Claudius is not a static character because he changes throughout the play and he is the antagonist in this play. In Act 3 Scene 3 we can fin Claudius soliloquy, where he prays and asks God for forgiveness. Claudius can also be sensitive and gentle. He is genuinely sorry for Polonius' death, and he truly loves Gertrude. He must kill Hamlet, but he refuses to do so with his own hand for Gertrude's sake. Claudius soliloquy expresses that he is sorry for murdering his brother and for all the things that he has done. He asks for forgiveness and he is really sorry but he does not want to lose his possessions. That cannot be, since I am still possessed of those effects for which I did the murder: My crown, mine own ambition, and my queen (Act 3 Scene 3 lines 54-56). He is not a monster; he is morally weak, content to trade his humanity and very soul for a few prized possessions. He is seeking for forgiveness and he asks God to help him but he does not want to give up anything. This is something that happens in real life when someone has done something wrong and has obtained something, sometimes is not easy to give up all those things and ask for forgiveness.
