2012-13 NHCO Statistics


In 2012-13, NHCO assisted 5,301 families in need toward stability and self-sufficiency by providing $1,466, 148 in funds, goods and services as well as information, support and advocacy. When we bring our hearts and hands together, we are working toward a community where no one needs to feel cold, hungry or alone. Our Services include: Food Pantries & Garden

1,386 families served in two pantries 79 older adults received extra food through Senior Commodities $581,432 in food and grocery certificates were distributed 500 families received organic, fresh produce monthly from our Garden

Utility Assistance

1,357 families served $121,006 in $1 Energy grants received for 334 families in need

Sharing Projects

1,274 children received new backpacks and school supplies through our Back-to-School Supplies project 388 families received winter coats during our Free Coat Shop 728 families received Thanksgiving meals from our Thanksgiving on Every Table project 583 families received utility and grocery credits through Sharing Holiday Warmth 1,547 children received holiday gifts through our Holiday Toy Shop 520 families received Spring Share candy baskets and food certificates $353,950 in financial and in-kind assistance received by families in need

Emergency Assistance

613 families served includes gift cards for gas, clothing and prescriptions 199 families received $9,140 in gas cards and bus passes and 9 families received help with car repairs and insurance (not related to Community Auto) 10 uninsured and underinsured individuals received $1,604 iin prescription, dental and vision assistance

Employment, Financial & Education Assistance 91 low-income families are enrolled in Family Savings Accounts (FSA) 24 FSA participants received matching funds to purchase an asset such as a car or home, to pursue higher education, begin a business or pay for home repairs $44,027 in matching FSA grants received 426 individuals received employment services 108 individuals received free legal help through our Ask the Attorney program 60 individuals participated in our Family Development Program 51 low-income workers purchased vehicles through Community Auto 11 individuals attended a support group 26 individuals attended financial literacy classes 14 non-traditional students received $10,998 in college scholarships

Caregiving for Seniors 596 vulnerable seniors remained safe and independent in their own homes 176 seniors received 5,641 rides on our Free Rides for Seniors shuttle

NHCO acts on behalf of the local community, which in turn supports our efforts. In 2012-13, 5,410 donors and groups supported NHCO:

We also received 125 donated vehicles for our Community Auto program.

In 2012-13, a record 1,715 volunteers gave 44,368 hours. Of those, 524 were youth, giving 3278.5 hours to assist their neighbors in need. This is the equivalent of 21 full-time staff members!

ABriefHistoryandCurrentFocus In1986,whenfloodingravagedportionsoftheNorthHills,localreligiousandcommunityleadersbegan workingtogethertoassistfloodvictims,directingtheresourcesofferedbycongregations,businesses, civicorganizationsandindividualstobestmeettheneedsofaffectedfamilies.Asaresult,NorthHills CommunityOutreachwasincorporatedin1987. Personsservedincludethosewhoarehungry,homelessorfacingeviction;thosewithoutadequate clothing,heat,light,ormedicalcare;personswithdisabilities;andthosewhohaveexperiencednatural disasters,suchasfireorflood.Crisiscanalsobecausedbyillness,divorce,aging,deathofalovedone, lossofajob,andaddiction.NHCOsserviceareaisallofnorthernAlleghenyCountyforthemajorityof programs;someservicesareofferedcountywide. NHCOdevelopsprogramminginresponsetounmetcommunityneeds,workingincooperationwith otherorganizationstothegreatestpossibleextent. NHCOactsonbehalfofthelocalcommunityandthecommunitysupportsourefforts.Manyvolunteers givetheirtimeandtalentatNHCOtoassisttheirneighborsinneed. Bysharingwhatwealreadyhave,togetherwecanensurethatourneighborsinneedreceiveimmediate, compassionateandeffectivehelp.ThisinessenceisNHCO'smission.
