Types of Assessment

Assessment FOR Learning is commonly known as formative & diagnostic This is information is gathered to determine student progress during an activity. This will help teachers make decisions about what and how to teach. Examples: Journals, Diagnostic tests Assessment OF Learning is commonly known as summative assessment The use of an activity to measure, record, and report of a student's level of achievement in regards to specific learning expectations. Usually at the end of a unit. Examples: Portfolios, Culminating Tasks, Tests Assessment AS Learning The use of an activity to allow students to use assessment for their own learning. Self and peer assessment allow students to reflect on learning and identify areas of strength or need. Examples: Peer/Self-Evaluation, Observation checklists, Exit Cards

Students will be evaluated in 4 categories: 1. Knowledge 2. Thinking 3. Application 4. Communication We want our students to be well rounded citizens, so they will also be evaluated for 6 Learning Skills using E for Excellent, S for Satisfactory and NI for Needs Improvement Collaboration Independent Work Initiative Organization Responsibility Self Regulations

Backwards Design - We start with the end in mind! In order to succeed, we must have a goal. Teachers plan with a goal in mind and in order to plan we will: Get to know students Create assignments that will help demonstrate their abilities Provide engaging lessons to enhance learning Outline clear expectations Provide students with timely meaningful feedback
