Professional Disclosure Statement Emily Sanborn

This document reflects the standards of practice of the American School Counselor Association; the purpose of which is to share with you my objectives, professional background, and the ethical code to which I am bound. If you have any questions about my role as a school counselor, please feel free to contact me.

Role of the School Counselor


Professional school counselors provide culturally competent services to students, parents/guardians, school staff and the community in the following areas: School Guidance Curriculum structured lessons designed to help students achieve the desired competencies and to provide all students with the knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level. School guidance curriculum includes: academic support -- including organizational, study and test-taking skills; goal setting and decision-making; career awareness, exploration and planning; education on understanding self and others; peer relationships, coping strategies and effective social skills; communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution; substance abuse education; and multicultural/diversity awareness. Individual Student Planning ongoing systemic activities designed to help students establish personal goals and develop future plans. Responsive Services individual or group counseling, consultation with parents, teachers, and other educators, referrals to other school support services or community resources, peer-helping, psycho-education, intervention and advocacy at the systemic level. System Support professional development, consultation, collaboration, supervision, program management and operations.

Personal Background
As a professional school counselor I am licensed by the Oregon Department of Education, I have earned a Masters of Science degree in Counseling from Portland State University (2014). My specialization was School Counseling and I hold and additional post-graduate certificate in Marital, Couple, and Family Counseling. I am registered as an intern of the Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists. I am a member of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the Oregon School Counselor Association (OSCA). My specialized training makes me uniquely qualified to attend to the developmental needs of all students through a comprehensive school counseling program addressing the following domains: academic, career, personal/social development and community involvement. My training as a school counselor is grounded in clinical skills adapted to the school setting. In my professional life, I have worked with youth and families in a variety of educational and community outreach initiatives. I offer a snapshot of my professional experience here to provide you with a context for who I am and what I bring to this work.

Prior to my work as a professional school counselor, I served as a director of a mentoring program for youth in the juvenile justice system. I also have experience coordinating national service education workshops for mentoring and literacy. I previously taught sixth grade Language Arts and Mathematics, and I have led outdoor education programs for middle school students. Additionally, I hold a Masters degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City (2002), where I studied world religions, interreligious dialogue, and social justice. I have a thorough background in studying and working with communities of distinct cultural, ethnic, and religious heritage and I am very interested in diversity issues in the school environment.

I believe
Each personal has the right to respect and dignity as a human being and to education and counseling services without prejudice as to personal character, belief or practice regardless of age, color, disability, ethnic group, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, marital status or socioeconomic status. Each person has the right to self-direction and self-development. Each person has the right of choice and responsibility for goals reached. Each person has the right to privacy and thereby the right to expect the counselorcounselee relationship to comply with all laws, policies, and ethical standards pertaining to confidentiality.

Code of Ethics
As a school counselor, I am bound by the Code of Ethics of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and will keep confidential the contents of my work with each student. However, I am legally and ethically required to break confidentiality in the following circumstances: Disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others. A student indicated that she/he has been neglected or abused. I am ordered by a judge to break confidentiality. A student gives me permission to share privileged information with others. A referral is necessary for additional help and services for a student.

Fees
As an employee of the public school system, my services as a professional school counselor are paid for by the school district.
