Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb) As a result of this lesson, students will be able to: Extract critical dates and events from the information collected Create an online timeline based on the information gathered Works independently to complete task Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Available computers (computer room booked) Provide safe and appropriate websites for students to research the topic Timeline maker link provided to students Provision for students at educational risk: Place children with vision impairments close to the big screen Supervise class by moving around the room, and attending to students who tend to struggle with ICT

Teacher instructs all students to move quietly down the mat in the computer room. 2. Teacher begins by saying In previous lessons we have discussed the reasons for British colonisation within Australia. Who can share with the group some of these reasons? Prompt the class to begin a

discussion. Computer for each student, and pen and paper.

3. The teacher will ask the students if they remember any significant people in the late 1700s or early 1800s who influenced the Australian colonies. 2 min

Whilst students are still on the mat, teacher explains the task for the day, When we move back to our computers, we will be logging onto our year 5 wiki and you will see that I have attached three links. Individually you will explore and extract the most relevant dates and events from the time period, that you will later use to form your timeline

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

1. Teacher instructs students to go back to their computers and spend 15 minutes examining the websites provided. Teacher will circulate the room supervising the students use of the internet, and making sure students are staying on task.

Once the 15 minutes of research time is up, the teacher will ask the students to come back to the mat, to explain the next part of the task., Year 5s, after collecting all of the important dates from these websites you will now summarise your data but using the online tool timeline maker from the soft school website. Choose a maximum of 12 events that happened during colonisation to add to your timeline.

3. Teacher explains each step in using timeline maker. a. Click Start b. Fill in the title E.g. Australian Colonisation c. Change the amount of events to suit your research d. Write in the event date. E.g. 11 November 2014 e. And a brief event description. E.g. Remembrance Day 10 min f. Once all information is included click Generate Timeline.

4. Ask the students if there are any questions regarding this task or using timeline maker. Direct different questions as student to check for understanding. What is the next step once you have found all your information?

5. The teacher tells the students to return to their computers in which they will complete their time line task.

6. Teacher circulates the room making sure students are using the Internet appropriately, and tending to students who are experiencing problems.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students) 7. To finish the lesson, teacher selects students at random to inform the 2 min class on a few key dates that they have come across in todays lesson. Can anyone name the important event that happened on the 26 of july 1802?. 8. Teachers informs students Please screen shot your time-line, and I min place it in your file on the wiki. We will be coming back to this mind map in future lessons.
