Big Business Lesson Plan February 17th 2014 Artifact Description The following artifact is a lesson plan I created

in preparation for teaching a lesson on Big Business in a Junior U.S. History class at East Dubuque High School. This artifact displays the planning I had done in preparation for teaching a lesson on Rockefeller, Carnegie, monopolies, and the different kinds of integration. I worked with my cooperating teacher in order to create a coherent lesson plan that I felt was going to be the most effective for the material I was covering. Wisconsin Teacher Licensure Standard Alignment This experience best aligns with standard seven of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupil, the community, and curriculum goals. This experience aligns with standard seven because I was able to use my knowledge of the subject matter and the curriculum development to guide my planning. I incorporated the Wisconsin State History standards into my lesson plan in order to follow the curriculum standards set by the state of Wisconsin. In preparation for teaching, I shared my lesson plan with my cooperative teacher. We corresponded with each other on how the lesson would work. My cooperative teacher made suggestions on how to improve the plan and what to be prepared for. Being able to work with another teacher, provided the teamwork aspect to my lesson. With my cooperative teachers guidance and my knowledge of the variance in learning styles, I chose the SQ3R strategy to conduct my lesson. The SQ3R reading strategy was a way for me to make the material relevant to each of the students. It allowed for each of them to have input in their learning. As a result of this experience, I am more competent in this standard because I was able to plan coherent instruction that met the needs of different learning styles. Using SQ3R strategy allowed for me to teach the material in ways that would benefit many different kinds of learners. It used surveying, questioning, reading, discussing, and writing to address the different learning styles. UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Alignment This experience best aligns with KSD3.c Engaging Students in Learning. This KSD states: The candidate has the ability to engage students in the learning process by linking appropriate content, based upon suitable instructional materials and resources, to students knowledge and experience, being certain that all students are cognitively coherent and appropriately paced for all students and allows for reflection and closure as appropriate.

I feel that I was able to engage the students in learning through the different ways I presented the material. Using the SQ3R strategy helped me to create instruction that would benefit different types of learners. The lesson had different aspects in each part as to create a coherent lesson while keeping it interesting for the students. The students were able to create the questions they wanted to be able to answer by reading the section in the book. By allowing the students to choose what question they wanted to answer, they got to contribute and then read with a purpose that meant something to them. I felt that by combining these aspects into my lesson, I was designing the best possible instruction for the material. I am more competent after this experience because I have had the opportunity to create a plan and then put it into place. I worked with a cooperative teacher who guided me in the direction I needed to go and have learned what works for students at this level of learning. Secondary KSDs KSD1.a: Manages Student Behavior KSD1.c: Provides Feedback to Students KSD1.e: Demonstrates Flexibility and Responsiveness Reflection What I learned about teaching/learning Through creating my lesson plan, I learned how important specificity is in planning. It is important, as a teacher, to know exactly what you want to do for each activity. It is also important to know what you want the students to get out of the lesson. It is a good thing to have a plan but to also not be afraid to deviate from the plan if need be. The plan is there as a guide, but it is up to the teacher to know if the plan is working or if it needs to be modified. Having a specific plan made actually makes it easier to be flexible in the plan. You have to know what and how youre teaching in order to respond to students that might change your plans. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator I learned about my instructional style. I like to have different activities for the students to do throughout the class period so they stay engaged. I also learned that I like to use a textbook as a guide for my instruction, but I like to use outside resources to teach the students the materials. I feel that primary resources and secondary sources provide more real world context for the students and allow them to relate to the material better than what a textbook can. I learned about how important planning is for me as a teacher. I have to know what Im doing in order for the class to go smoothly. I also learned that I need to not try to put too much into a lesson plan and leave some time for me to discuss the material with the students. Otherwise, I feel rushed and do feel like I have to get through the whole lesson plan. Its good for me to be relaxed because then I am better at presenting the material in a coherent way.
