It is the most wonderful time of the year! Winter break is upon us and it will be a well-deserved break for all, but we cannot go on break without recognizing how awesome our AVID students and parents are! We are so encouraged each and every day by the dedication and hard work displayed by our AVID students. WPRs, Cornell Notes, TRFs, Tutorials, Learning Logs, core class homework and projects-they do it all and they do it well! They truly are the best students at LMS! We are fortunate to teach such an amazing group of students! Just so you know, we think it is impossible to have such a wonderful group of students without wonderful parents. We especially want to take the time to thank you! You continue to go above and beyond by volunteering and assisting us in and out of the classroom. Dances, guest speakers, field trips, food donations, selling tickets, volunteering at the Bazaar, grill masters-YOU are the reason for the AVID program being such a success at LMS. As 2013 comes to an end, we hope you will sit back and reflect on the many successes your student has had at LMS and in AVID this year. It is our hope that 2014 will be just as remarkable and provide just as many opportunities for success and wonderful memories! Have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday season!
A sneak peak
In the AVID classroom
The 6th grade classes are officially rolling out the Tutorial Process! This process will allow students to bring in questions they have in their core classes. Using collaboration and teamwork they will find an answer for their Point of Confusion.
Block 7 AVID students were given the opportunity to participate in a mock Continuous School Improvement (CSI) interview panel. This was in preparation for our Advanced Ed accreditation visit in February. They were interviewed by Dr. Fouse, our Assistant Principal, Ms. Dana Jackson, Isles District Math Instructional Systems Specialist, and Mr. Alan Silverstein, Isles District Educational Technology Instructional Systems Specialist. The students were able to share their knowledge of our school purpose, goals, and interventions. They also shared their educational experiences at LMS.
The 8th grade AVID Students have been working on implementing Costas Higher Level questions in their Cornell Notes and Tutorial forms. Students will be expected to use higher level thinking throughout the rest of the school year.
All AVID classes have been introduced to Philosophical chairs. Students partake in a debate on a specific topic that is impacting our world today. Students choose a side and are able to express their beliefs and opinions. Philosophical chairs is a group activity which is designed to: promote critical thinking, enhance listening skills, focus thought processes, gain a greater understanding of issues in the world today, and allow all sides of the issue to be heard.
Our first AVID Field day was a success! Highline adventure hosted our field day and provided us with team building activities, a rock climbing wall, and a spider mountain obstacle course. Students learned how to work together using collaboration and teamwork. Some students were able to overcome their fear of heights with the motivation their peers gave them. We enjoyed rewarding the students for working so hard during the 1st quarter! Thank you to the chaperones who made this day possible:
Mr. Friedman, Mrs. Helmick, Mrs. Albrandt, Mr. Cabrera, Mrs. Cabrera, Mr. Alexander, Mrs. Bright, Mrs. Neely, Mr. Ruszkowski, Mrs. Ruszkowski, and Mr. & Mrs. Knowles. Thank you to the grill masters who made a fantastic feast for us to enjoy: Mr. Bright, Mr. North, Mr. Mauzy, and Mr. Milby Thank you Master Sergeant Green from ALS for allowing us to borrow your grill for the day!
Working together
To make each other better
The 8th grade AVID students were provided with the opportunity to show off their leadership and tutorial skills. Students set up a mock tutorial group to model an effective tutorial session via video teleconference. Block three students were able to video chat with AVID students at SHAPE Middle School in Belgium. Block one students were able to video chat with AVID students at Aviano Middle School in Italy.
Students were also given the opportunity to collaborate over the Video teleconference about the AVID classroom. They were able to compare and contrast effective methods used at each school. We are very proud of our 8th graders for being role models for other AVID programs in Europe.
Congratulations to all of our AVID Students who made the Gold honor roll by earning straight As and the students who made the Silver honor roll by earning As and Bs in the first quarter. We are so proud of you! Keep up the hard work!

Reflect on why you are thankful for your education and one educational goal you have accomplished in 2013.
SUPER STARS
Block One-Denaeja Jackson The goal I have accomplished is getting an A+ in my hardest subject which is Science. I easily did this by studying for the quizzes we have everyday.
I am thankful for my education, because in some parts of the world kids cant afford school. I am able to go to school so I can get a good education. One educational goal I have accomplished this year is getting As and Bs in the first quarter.
I am thankful for my education, because some people dont have an education and I am glad that I do. If I didnt have my education, I would be pretty upset. One of my greatest accomplishments this year was helping the principal with a CSI presentation. She was very grateful, and I was happy that she chose me to help her.
Congratulations to:
Sophie Friedman, Sara Leubkert, Ellie Powell, Alyssa Medeiros, Patrick North, Gloryssel Moreno, Jade Kuhr, Brian Ruszowski, Lydia Graham, & Ellie Friedman.
