Burke Middle & High School Report of Principal and School Improvement Council

12/14/13-1001010

Burke Middle High School has long been a center of the peninsula community of Charleston, South Carolina. Throughout the years there has been sincere support for the students here, and that support has been evident again this year. We have enjoyed a wonderful year partnering with our community to further support the learning environment and learning of students. The students, faculty and staff members have worked collaboratively to strengthen and expand connections with community stakeholders for the benefit of Burke students and, ultimately, our community as a whole. Throughout this year, the implementation of the Renaissance Program through Jostens has been a focal point of an improved learning environment. The Renaissance Program allows for the recognition of staff and students for their academic accomplishments for the purpose of increasing positive behavior and overall improvement. We also reached out to the community and held our first Family Symposium themed "Strengthening Our Community Through Family and School Partnerships." We believe this groundbreaking experience will prove to enhance the relationships between school and community. We also continued the implementation of our personalized learning initiative. Teachers are enhancing the learning of our students by providing them with more academic experiences that are tailored to meet their individual needs. We will continue to expand personalized learning experiences at Burke in the current school year. Through the continued efforts of students, staff, and faculty and the support of our community, we will meet our goals of having a personalized learning experience for every child. Maurice D. Cannon, Principal NeCole Davis, SIC Chairperson

Burke Middle & High School ESEA/Federal Accountability Rating System

12/14/13-1001010

In July 2013, the South Carolina Department of Education was granted a waiver from several accountability requirements of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This waiver allowed SC to replace the former pass/fail system with one that utilizes more of the statewide assessments already in place and combine these subject area results with graduation rate (in high schools) to determine if each school met the target or made progress toward the target. This analysis results in a letter grade for the school rather than the pass/fail system of previous years. For a detailed review of the matrix for each school and districts that determined the letter grade, please use the following link: http://ed.sc.gov/data/esea/ or request this information from your childs district or school. Overall Weighted Points Total Overall Grade Conversion Index Score 90-100 80-89.9 70-79.9 60-69.9 Less than 60 Grade A B C D F 66.2 D Description Performance substantially exceeds the state's expectations.
