Matter, Jehan (2013) The effect of Mozart's music on Child Development in a Jordanian Kindergarten.

Education, 133, (3) 370-377

1. What was the hypothesis? That playing music in a class room specifically "The Mozart Effect: Music for Children" would show a difference in the social, cognitive, and physical development on children. 2. Was the purpose of the study clear? Yes, the purpose of this study was clear. The research that was provided was tested over an 8 month span. The conclusions to the study was recorded to show the effects of the testing of the children who participated in this research. 3. What was the methodology for testing the hypothesis? The participants were divided equally into two groups. The first group who was the controlled group. They were tested in the beginning of the study. The music was not applied to them. The second group was also tested in the beginning and the music was placed in the room as background music. Then both groups were tested again after 8 months of observation. 4. Was the methodology appropriate? I found that the method for this experiment was highly appropriate. Both of the groups that were involved were of the same grade level and the ending conclusion has been shown to be effective way of learning. 5. What or who were the subjects? The subjects were: 21 kindergarten aged children in a controlled environment. 21 kindergarten aged children who were the subjects of the study. 6. How were the subjects chosen did the selection seem appropriate? The 42 kindergarten children were all hand selected purposefully from a special school. It does not state what kind of "Special School" it was. I feel that any group of kindergarteners from special schools or not would have also benefited for the study. 7. Is the study repeatable?

Yes, the study is repeatable. In fact many researchers have studied and performed their own studies to show the effects of young children and the effects of music. 8. If you were to replicate the study what would you do different? I would choose a normal school where there were two kindergarten classes. One class held in the morning and the other class held in the afternoon. Both classes would be taught by the same teacher. So this way all the education they receive are the same. 9. How logical are the conclusions? The conclusion of the study were great. The children that was in the controlled group from testing in the beginning, and then tested after 8 months only showed little improvement. The children that was the experimental group showed a high improvement in all the areas that were tested. The experimental group test results were that the social aspect tested high, the cognitive domain that was tested was high, and the physical domain tested high. 10. How generalizable are the conclusions? The study was conducted in Jordanian. I feel that children all over the world have the same capabilities to learn the same way. I also feel that this study could have been done anywhere and the results would be very similar to this study. 11. Did the investigators report any unusual or unexpected findings? There was not any unusual or expected findings that were reported.
