Digital Storyboard: The Headless Ghost Rider of Elmore, Ohio

Context
Subject: American Folklore Audience: Enthusiastic High school English 11 and Honors English 11 students in a small to large-group setting Class sizes range from 10-28 Scope / Sequence: This retelling of the legend, The Headless Ghost Rider of Elmore, will be used as an introduction to the American Folklore unit. Students live near the town of Elmore so they will appreciate the familiarity of the story. This will also serve to pique their interest in other folk stories we will read and that they will investigate. Following the viewing, students will conduct Internet research to read other variations of this story, which lends to its categorization as a legend. Supplementary Materials: Additional readings and lessons will be provided using the Prentice Hall Literature - The American Experience English 11 textbook and resource materials.

Objectives:
Based on the Common Core State Standards Students will be able to: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.3 Analyze the impact of the author's choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama (e.g., where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.3 Evaluate various explanations for actions or events and determine which explanation best accords with textual evidence, acknowledging where the text leaves matters uncertain. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.9 Integrate information from diverse sources, both primary and secondary, into a coherent understanding of an idea or event, noting discrepancies among sources.

Context
Multimedia Principles: Coherence Principle - Extraneous materials will be excluded from the video Modality Principle - The narration will be conducted verbally as opposed to reading the narrative Personalization Principle - The narrative will be told in a conversational style, using local colloquialisms and informal language in order to appeal to the audience

Context Statement:

The Legend of the Headless Ghost Rider of Elmore, Ohio: An Introduction to American Folklore

Narration: A long time ago, in Elmore, not too far from here, the legend of the Headless Ghost Rider began. According to many, the legend is absolutely true and goes something like this Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: Back during WWI, a young man and woman were devastated to hear that the man was drafted and would soon ship off to the front lines. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: The couple said their goodbyes, promising each other that their love would endure the miles apart. The soldier kissed and hugged her goodbye and left for more than three long years. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: The young soldier endured relentless battles against the enemy. He held his best friend in his arms after their entire platoon was ambushed and they were the only survivors. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: After completing his tour, the young soldier was honorably discharged and made his way back to Elmore. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: He bought a new motorcycle and took off to surprise his love, believing that she would still be waiting to become his bride, even though they had no communication for three years. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: When the soldier arrived at the old farm house, he walked up on the porch and looked through the window. Instead of finding her waiting for him, he found her in the arms of another man. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: Distraught and devastated, the solder tore off down the long gravel driveway. He rounded the corner at a high rate of speed and lost control as he crossed Mud Creek Bridge. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: His motorcycle careened over the side of the bridge, killing the soldier. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: When the authorities arrived, they found his body and the motorcycle torn to pieces, including the soldiers decapitated head. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: Years later, the only remaining piece of the old farmhouse is an overgrown lane, but the Headless Ghost Rider continues to visit his love on the same day every year - his tortured soul reliving the night his heart was broken for eternity. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: On March 21st, if you go out to Mud Creek Bridge in Elmore, park your car on the bridge, flash your lights three times, and honk your horn three times the light of the Headless Ghost Rider will again fly down the old drive, round the corner, and disappear on the bridge. Transition: Fade to next image

Narration: Do this with caution though. Those who have experienced it have never been the same again. Some say that the soldier isnt particularly kind to young men who come to see his beloved Transition: Fade to next image
