Leon 1 Christina Leon John Kubler English 114B 23 March 2014 Argument Proposal As we discussed LGBT rights in class

everything took me by surprised and confused me. However, on particular issue that was really interesting to me was gay rights because its such a hot topic right now in todays world. I will be debating whether I agree or disagree with this issue and Ill be discussing what for and against gay rights activists have to say about it as well. Gay rights has been a controversial issue in America that not all states have agreed in allowing them to get married to same sex partners. Most gays are looked down upon and are often judged because most straight people arent comfortable with accepting them. America has gone a long way with granting them rights but there is still work needing to be done. My Project is as follows: I would like to start of by giving some background information about gay and lesbian rights, and then I would like to focus my further reading as to all the struggles and obstacles they had to go through in order to accomplish what they have accomplished today and attempt to try and answer this research question: Should gays and lesbians be denied their civil rights? Is it fair to punish them for something they cant control because of the chemical imbalance in their heads? I will also be touching base upon transgender and bisexuals as well and whether or not they have the same rights as well.

Leon 2 Works Cited Fairchild, Mary. "Bible Verses About Homosexuality." Christianity. About.com, n.d. Web. 24 Mar. 2014. This website gives a list a Bible verses that states the religious side when it comes to gay rights. As it states in the bible gay people will be condemned because having relations with the same sex is a sin. I will be using this in my essay to help support the naysayer arguments and a few of my own in paragraph one. Morris, Charles E., and John M. Sloop. "What Lips These Lips Have Kissed: Refiguring the Politics of Queer Public Kissing Earlier Versions of the Essay Were Presented at the 2003 NCA/AFA Argumentation Conference and at the 2004 NCA Convention." Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies 3.1 (2006): 1-26. Print. This journal explains that when two gay people are kissing or being affectionate in public, that straight people look down upon them and feel uncomfortable. Straight people often pass judgment for the same acts they do as well, however the only difference is that its with the opposite sex. I will be using this in my article when I explain the gay rights in California and Arizona as well. I could also add this in my friends personal experience. Morrissey, Edward. "On Wedding Cakes, Gay Marriage, and Our Growing Inability to Tolerate One Another - The Week." The Week. Theweek.com, 25 Feb. 2014. Web. 25 Mar. 2014. This article discussed the issue that occurred in Arizona with a gay couple going to a bakery to purchase a cake for their wedding and they were denied service due to religious reasons. The governor of Arizona veto the bill deny service due to sexual orientation because she believes business is more important than beliefs. I will be using this article in my claim 3 argument.
