Childhood cancer families also depended on support from the people around them including their community and neigh%ors to provide meals and help them in any ,ay possi%le1 One father said" )Some%ody A,asB al,ays coming over G phone al,ays ringing G people al,ays sho,ing concern- .p1 $?01 2he care and support of the childhood cancer family5s friends and family sho,s ho, 8od truly ,or3s in the ,orld1 Some families focused on their religious %eliefs to help them get through their 9ourney ,ith childhood cancer1 ;any parents %elieved that )8od only gives you ho, much you can handle- .p1 $?0 and the fact that their neigh%ors and family ,ere trying to help as much as possi%le" supports this statement1

Lighthouse Hope Olympics: Fundraising for LFR The Founding of Lighthouse Family Retreat (LFR) Fulie Festefeldt" .retreat family manager0 at Lighthouse Family Retreat .LFR0 ,as one of the fe, team mem%ers ,ho 3ne, the founder of Lighthouse1 She confirms in a telephone intervie," Athe founderB ,as a pediatric nurse1 2he founder sa, ho, families ,ere %eing torn apart %y childhood cancer and ,anted to help mend their %ro3en relationships1 2he founder fulfilled her dream in August #$$$ and created the Lighthouse Family Retreat ,here families could rela* %y the seaside" reconnect family relationships" and find 8od as their ne, light in their storm ,ith childhood cancer .F1 Festefeldt" personal communication" ;arch #?" #$ !01 2he first retreat started in August #$$$ ,ith si* families and a ma9ority of the volunteers included Athe founder5sB family and friends1 Her dream started ,ith si* families and a%out =$ volunteers1 Fourteen years later" over $ families are served each ,ee3 of the summer and over +$ volunteers come to give their love and service to the retreat families1 2here are a%out # retreats each summer" ,hich totals over $$ families served each yearJ ma3ing up a total of over "$$$ families served since August #$$$1

Lighthouse Hope Olympics: Fundraising for LFR The Mission of Lighthouse Family Retreat Since the first retreat in August :::" LFR has served over "$$$ families living through childhood cancer1 2he mission statement of LFR is to )serve children ,ith cancer and their families at a seaside retreat to help them to laugh" restore family relationships and find hope in 8od- .,,,1lightousefamilyretreat1org01 Families are given a chance to rela* and have fun in the sun1 ;any of the families pro%a%ly have not %een on a family vacation in Iuite a long time %ecause they have %een ,ith their child in the hospital and they do not have the money or time to spend on a vacation1 Lighthouse Family Retreat provides families ,ith a fun rela*ing vacation that they ,ill never forget1 2he retreats give the families a chance to re9uvenate" reconnect as a family" and let the 3ids 9ust %e 3ids1 2his nonprofit organi7ation is the light in the storm of cancer that reaches out to these families and gives them hope and strength to fight the ,ar against cancer1 2he event planner and her family attended the second retreat Lighthouse had in April #$$ %ecause the planner had %een diagnosed ,ith cancer1 2hey had such an incredi%le e*perience that it is still tal3ed a%out today1 2he planner and her father have %een returning as volunteers for ten years once a ,ee3 each summer1 Last summer" the event planner also fulfilled an internship ,ith LFR in ,hich she stayed do,n at the %each all summer and helped operate $ retreats to serve over $$ retreat families1 2his nonprofit organi7ation has had such a large impact on the planner that she 3ne, she ,anted to %enefit them someho, ,ith my senior seminar pro9ect1

Rationale: Importance of Fundraising &n order to provide these families ,ith an ama7ing e*perience" Lighthouse Family Retreat is constantly dependent on donations1 Heimovics" Herman" and Coughlin . ::=0" use the )resource dependency theory- to give an e*planation to ,hy nonprofit organi7ations are constantly dependent on outside sources" such as sponsorships" and donations" %oth monetary and in63ind1 (onprofit organi7ations depend on a human resource frame in ,hich )people are the most valua%le resource1- &n order to gain sponsors and donors" nonprofits must attain a strong relationship ,ith a %usiness or company1 &f they are a%le to attain a strong %ond and stay connected to a relia%le source" they can e*pect that %usiness or company to help them in the long run1 8inger Donnan .#$ #0 adds" )2he most important aspect of event planning is clear communications ,ith attendees" vendors" and the client- ./ D01 For e*ample" Lighthouse Family Retreat has a strong connection ,ith a doughnut shop in Destin" Fl1 Lighthouse depends on this restaurant to provide them ,ith a consecutive amount of food each day to help serve %rea3fast to retreat families" volunteers" and staff at the summer retreats1 (onprofits cannot run %y themselves1 2hey are dependent on their volunteers to help carry out the organi7ation5s goals and missions1 @olton and 8uist6Felley .#$$:0 state that is important to have a ,ritten policy %ecause )it is a form of ris3 management" and managing ris3 is a 3ey reason to have policies in place that pertain specifically to volunteers- ./=01 (onprofits are constantly dependent on volunteers" %ut volunteers need to %e taught ,hat to do %oth in their 9o% description and in case of a crisis or emergency1 &f the volunteers understand their 9o%s and ,hat to do in case of a crisis" then they ,ill )3no, ,hat to do if a pro%lem arises %ecause you Athe organi7ationB have already considered and addressed possi%le ris3s- ./=01 With the help of

Target Audience 2he target audience included 8ree3 Life organi7ations and other clu%s or organi7ations on Spring Hill College campus1 >ach clu% or organi7ation ,as informed to ma3e up one or t,o teams of $ students to participate in the Olympic games on ;arch =$" #$ !1 A variety of tactics ,ere used to help gather participants1

Implementation Strategy %) &old an e$ent 2he fundraising event ,as called Lighthouse Hope Olympics .LHO0 in ,hich teams of students at Spring Hill College competed against each other in a variety of fun outdoor games on Dorn Field on ;arch =$" #$ ! from :$$ p1m1 to !:$$ p1m1 2he teams that ,ere formed ,ere as3ed to donate a certain amount of materials from a given list in order to participate1 2he materials gathered ,ere then going to %e used at the upcoming #$ ! summer retreats1 2he teams signed up using the LHO )>ntry Form- .See Appendi* A0 to participate in the fundraising event and collected items from the )Lighthouse Wish List- .See Appendi* A0 Students ,ere then told to %ring the donations on the event day1 2he first tactic to o%tain students ,as to reserve event space1 2his included reserving event space for promotional purposes" staff meetings" and large event space for the day of the event1 2he event planner started advertising for LHO %y setting up a sign6up ta%le in the Student Center Cafeteria at Spring Hill College ,here students could pic3 up information a%out forming a team and the reIuirements of forming a team1 2he application" We%>vents" ,as used to reserve a ta%le in the Student Center from ;onday" Fe%ruary $" #$ ! to Wednesday" Fe%ruary :"

Lessons Learned 2he %iggest lesson learned involved learning ho, to ,or3 ,ith sponsorships1 2he planner had never ,or3ed ,ith sponsorships %efore" so it ,as definitely a challenge to try and get sponsors1 Sponsorships are very difficult to o%tainJ especially from large %usinesses1 <at Scanland .#$ !0 said" )Organi7ations are constantly competing for fundraising- and companies decide ,hom they ,ill give sponsorships to1 Companies ,ill give out sponsorships depending on the )Iuality- of the nonprofit1 2hey ,ant to 3no, ho, their company can ma3e a difference %y sponsoring another company or organi7ation1 Scanland also said that it is especially difficult to o%tain sponsors %ecause they have many limitations1 Limitations include deadlines of ,hen sponsorship forms can %e su%mitted" specific types of organi7ations" or regional limitations1 For e*ample ,hen spea3ing ,ith ;ichael Ning .;ar3eting Director0 at <rovidence Hospital" he stated that the organi7ations they sponsored had to %enefit people from the local area and had to %e ,ell 3no,n1 &t is especially difficult for small organi7ations that are not ,ell 3no,n li3e Lighthouse Family Retreat1 @usinesses are not very ,illing to give a sponsorship to an organi7ation that is small and not ,ell 3no,n %ecause they ,ant to 3no, the organi7ations their sponsoring1 Scanland also said that a lot of %usinesses decide %efore the ,inter holidays ,hat companies and organi7ations they ,ill %e giving to the follo,ing year1 So a lot of the sponsorship money is gone %y late Fanuary or Fe%ruary1 @y the time the pro9ect planner started

Lighthouse Hope Olympics: Fundraising for LFR as3ing for sponsorships from %usinesses" they did not have a lot of money to donate1 (o, that the planner 3no,s ho, %usinesses run their sponsorships" she ,ill contact them %efore the end of the year and ma3e sure that they have a plan to sponsor her pro9ect or fundraiser the follo,ing year1 &t is also prudent to stay on top of those %usinesses and constantly %e in contact ,ith them to remind them a%out providing a sponsorship1 Companies are e*tremely %usy and they forget a%out things" %ut in order to help them remem%er contact must %e constant1 @ecause sponsorships ,ere not o%tained until three ,ee3s %efore the date of the Olympic event" the pro9ect planner paid for a ma9ority of the supplies out of poc3et1 2he pro9ect planner ,as later reim%ursed %y the Communication Department ,hen all monetary sponsorships had %een su%mitted1 Another lesson she learned ,as that a pro9ect planner cannot set their e*pectations to high1 She had originally ,anted $ teams of students ,ith $ students on each team to attend LHO and ,anted to o%tain $$ items in donations1 After holding a sign6up ta%le in the student center cafeteria and meeting ,ith 8ree3 Life presidents and having no responses for nearly a month" she reali7ed she had to 3eep reminding students and tal3 to them face6to6face to ma3e sure they ,ere creating a team1 During the ,ee3 %efore LHO" only five teams ,ere formed and originally" !' students ,ere signed up to attend1 She ,as very happy ,ith the ,ay everything turned out1 $$ students ,ould have %een e*tremely hectic and hard to control1 &n the end" only =' people attended the Olympic event" %ut the event ,as more controlled" smoother" and ,ent ,ell and she ,as happy ,ith the results1
