Operations and Algebraic Thinking M 2.1 Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. M 2.2 Add and subtract within 20. M 2.3 Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Number operations in Base ten M 2.4 Understand place value. M 2.5 Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Measurement and Data M 2.6 Measure and estimate lengths in standard units. M 2.7 Relate addition and subtraction to length. M 2.8 Work with time and money. M 2.9 Represent and interpret data. Geometry M 2.10 Reason with shapes and their attributes. Mathematical Practices M 2.11 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. M 2.12 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. M 2.13 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. M 2.14 Model with mathematics. M 2.15 Use appropriate tools strategically. M 2.16 Attend to precision. M 2.17 Look for and make use of structure. M 2.18 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. The standards written above are 1st and 2nd grade level standards for mathematics. The standards show ideas and details of each mathematic situation for 1st and 2nd grade. Both grade levels build on each other or articulate. An example of this would be M 1.4 and M 2.3. This shows newer material, and more advanced material. In M 1.4 it says the students need to work with addition and subtraction equations and M 2.3 says the students will be working with multiplication. These standards build on each other because the addition and subtraction skills the students learn in 1st grade articulate to 2nd grade with what

they need to know to do multiplication in 2nd grade and will go so on and so forth as the students get older and go up in their grade levels.
