School English High School English Class English reading quiz A reading quiz over certain chapters of a book read that week. Print: book Web: Socrative Nebraska Language Arts Standards Using the Grade 12 Nebraska Language Arts Standard this lesson plan will be used to enhance students comprehension. Students will learn and apply reading skills and strategies to comprehend text. Students will extract and construct meaning using prior knowledge, applying text information, and monitoring comprehension while reading grade level text. Students will also build literary, general academic, and content specific grade level vocabulary. For this lesson plan, students will read assigned chapters from a theoretical book. At the end of the week when the chapters that were assigned are due, there will be a reading quiz. This reading quiz will taken using the Socrative website. Students will sign in to their Socrative student account, where they can then look at the questions the teacher posted and type in their answers. Examples of quiz questions the teacher might give the students could be as follows: From reading these chapters, who can you determine is the main character? What was the climax? What was the setting in the chapters? etc. These quiz questions will be in open ended short answer format. Once the students finish the quiz, the teachers will instantly be able to tell whether students are reading and understanding the material. It will also help the teacher know what needs to be retaught to the students. The students will each have their own computer in front of them to answer the quiz questions. The teacher will also be using a computer to instantly look at the students answers.

Objective 1: Reading Comprehension Objective 2: Evaluating and analyze narrative text. For example characterization, setting, plot, development, external and internal context, recurring themes, and point of view. Objective 3: Analyze the function and critique the effects of the authors use of stylistic and literary devices. For example, symbolism, irony, and foreshadowing. To prepare for the lesson the students will be required to have read the appropriate chapters of text assigned to them the week before. Students will be learning through a few of the stages of Blooms Taxonomy: Evaluate: Students will need to evaluate the content of the book through their assigned reading. Analyze: Students will analyze the narrative text by looking at the characters, setting, plot, etc. Apply: Students will need to apply the information in the readings to future tests, quizzes, and critical thinking assignments. Understand: Students will need to be able to comprehend the readings that are assigned. Remember: The quiz questions will help the students remember important points and topics of the readings. Overall, using these steps are going to help the students comprehend the readings they have been assigned. This will help the students think deeper and more critically about the story.

Preparing the Student Assessment of Student Learning

Lesson Sequence

First, the teacher will assign the students two chapters to read in an assigned book. The students will be given one week to complete the reading. The teacher will use the website Socrative to create a ten question short answer. The quiz will consist of questions that will challenge the students understanding of the text and promote critical thinking. Questions will ask students to evaluate the narrative text through questions pertaining to characterization, setting, plot development, internal and external conflicts, themes and point of view, etc. The teacher will have the students use inclass laptops or computers to log onto Socrative, through student account in order to complete the quiz. By requiring the students to use a student account login, it will assure that the teacher receives their results for the quiz. The students will be given 30-45 minutes to complete the quiz, and the teacher will supervise the students during this time. After the students complete the quiz they will log

out of Socrative. The teacher will then receive an email with an excel sheet that outlines the students answers. The excel sheet will instantly show the teacher whether the students are understanding and reading the material. Measurement of Success The quiz will be ten questions with each question being worth two points. The students will receive a score out of twenty total points. If students were not prepared for the quiz and did not read the assigned chapters then theyll score will reflect this lack of preparation. The questions will be specific enough to weed out those students who did not read.

Example Questions for Socrative Quiz 1. What is the climax of these chapters? 2. What internal or external conflict is faced? 3. What is the main setting during these chapters? 4. What is one example of symbolism represented? 5. From reading these chapters, whom can you determine as the main character? 6. Who is the narrator in this story? 7. What was the tone/mood of these chapters? For example, what emotions did these chapters make you feel? 8. What are two other main characters, and what was their effect on the main character? 9. What is foreshadowing? How did the author use foreshadowing? 10. Write a 3 sentence summary of these chapters.
