6-Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately, focusing on pairs of linear equations with two variables.(lesson over 3 variables) 3. References: 1. McDougal Little. Algebra 2. Larson, Boswell, Kanold, Stiff. Textbook.

4) Pre-requisite/Prior Knowledge: -Must have used linear combination and substitutions before with two variables. Need a knowledge of basic Algebra skills as well. 5) Key Terms -Linear equations with three variables: An equation of the form ax+by+cz=d, where x,y, and c are variables and a,b,c are not all zero. The solution of a linear equation in three variables is an ordered triple (x,y,z) and the graph is a plane. 6) Resources/Materials: -Student: Calculator, pencil, paper -Teacher: Chalk, chalk-board, smart board, power point, computer, and calculator if necessary. C.) Warm up: -Use your power point slides, and show them on the smart board so that you can write on them. Show the following problem on the smart board:

As the class walks in, let them know there is a problem on the board and ask them to work out the problem, while you take roll. After taking roll, go up to the smart board to work out the problem as follows:

-Step 1: Try and find the variable that will be the easiest to eliminate using the linear combination method. In this example we could easily use x or y, however I am going to elimintate the x, by taking equation a, and multiplying it by -1. Now we have:

Now if we were to combine these two we would get:

Now solving for y, we obtain:

Now find x by substituting y=4 back into one of our original equations: (a,b) I chose a so we get:

Now check to make sure the answer is correct by substituting the value for x and y into of the original equations: (

Now ask them if they see the similarities between solving using two variables and using three variables.

You will now proceed with the power point: Put the following three equations up:

Now show them what step one is: Step 1: Rewrite the system of three equations as two linear systems with three variables a) Choose two equations from above to create two systems

-Possible combinations: (a&b, a&c, b&c) b) Eliminate the same variable for each of the two. a&b (System 1): Multiply a by 4

And combine this result with equation b:

Now show the students that when you combine these two, the ys cancel and you are left with:

Now combine equation a & c a&c (System 2): Multiply c by 2

Now combine this result with equation b:

Now if you combine the two equations the ys will once again cancel out and you are left with:

Now show them step 2, which is as follows: Step 2: Take system #1 and system #2 (2 equations with 2 variables), and solve the two systems in two variables using linear combination. a) Choose which variable to get rid of By looking at system 1 ( and system 2 ( system 2 by 7 and then combine and we will elimination the x. ( , we see that we can multiply

Now combine this with system 1:

Now after you combine these two you see that you eliminate the x and you are left with:

This leads to step 3: Solve for your single variable:

Now go to step 4: Substitute the value found in step 3 into one of the equations from step 2 to solve for the remaining variable: By looking at system 1 ( and system 2 ( will easier or quicker to plug z=1 in for system 2: ( , we can see that it

Subtracting 5 from both sides we get:

Now proceed to step 5: Use the values from step 2 and step 3 and substitute them into one of the original equations (a,b,c) and solve for the remaining variable: We can substitute x=-3 and z=1 back into equation a to get: ( (

Step 6: Plug your answers for x,y,z back into one of the original equations and check your answer: Lets plug x=-3, y=4, z=1 into equation a. ( (

Now you know your answer is correct!

Now proceed to the next slide and show them the two statements: -If you obtain a false equation, such as 0=1, then the system has no solution -If you obtain an identity such as 0=0, then the system has infinite solutions. Go to the next slide, showing all 6 steps: Step1: Rewrite the system of three equations as two linear systems with three variables a) Choose two equations from above to create two systems. -Possible combinations: (a&b, a&c, b&c) b) Eliminate the same variable for each of the two. Step 2: Take system #1 and system #2 (2 equations with 2 variables), and solve the two systems in two variables using linear combination. a) Choose which variable to get rid of Step 3: Solve for your single variable. Step 4: Substitute the value found in step 3 into one of the equations from step 2 to solve for the remaining variable. Step 5: Use the values from step 2 and step 3 and substitute them into one of the original equations (a,b,c) and solve for the remaining variable. Step 6: Plug your answers for x,y,z back into one of the original equations and check your answer.
