Motivation
1. Students will enjoy getting to play with cups 2. Students will be excited to create music in a non-traditional way. 3. Students will be motivated to not fall behind in the pattern getting the cup face-down in front of the person to their right. 4. Students will also be motivated to get the beat right if the whole class is on the same beat and doing the moves correctly it can sound really neat! It is quite noticeable when someone does a wrong move.

Context
Connection: What is a rhythm? A beat? How do we use them? Why is rhythm important? Life is full or patterns, and rhythm s a pattern which represent itself. This is also called a routine, students experience routines at home and at school as a way of living their daily lives. It identifies with experience that take place over time.

Materials: Preparation: Cups, Students, YouTube Videos, rhythm word posters.

Application: Students will learn and demonstrate how to create the rhythm though the interactive activity. Eventually they will learn and understand the concept of the beat and rhythm and want to share it with people they care about most, family, friends and teachers. Create and display rhythm words for students to use and identify throughout activity.

Modeling

Expectations: Follow classroom rules, no put downs, help each other out, try your very best, have fun!

Step 1: Begin with students sitting in a circle Step 2: At the front of the room model the rhythm and movement for the kids before they are given cups. A. While modeling the game, explain to the kids what we are doing today. B. We will be playing The Cup Game today! C. We will each have one cup and as we do the pattern, the cups will shift around the circle. Step 3:Let student know we will play for practice then pay for real to show how much we learned.

Step 4: Now, hand out one cup for each student Model, step-by-step, the pattern and try to keep the same (slow) beat.
Step 5: Model, step-by-step, the pattern and try to keep the same beat but in a slow pace.

2. Students can help each other and learn from peers who have learned and can confidently play the game.
3. As a class, practice playing The Cup Game to a slow and steady beat. Students make the wrong move, let them know we we are practicing and practice make permanent, not perfect! 4.Discuss: Are we making music? 5. Explain; Can you think of ways to make this game harder or ways to adapt it?

Independent Practice
Assessment: Informally assess students ability to stay at a steady pace through listening Informally assess students ability to finish the pattern through observation from peers and teacher. Informally asses the teamwork students produce as class and the reactions to the game through observing, listening and questions. Teacher will grade students in small groups based on a checklist assessment, students must at least receive 4 out of 6 check makers to demonstrate understanding.

Activity: Play the game again another day where students who make the wrong move become observers who can do the pattern accurately the most will win extra point. Students should be practicing either alone or with friends to be the very best!

Closure
1. Practice in groups of 4-5, have students who have not grasped the concept all the way work with teacher. 2. As a class try to do The Cup Game at least twice as a large group. 3. Collect the cups and have a group discussion, ask students What type of routines do we do at home? At school? On the weekends? What happens when we dont follow our routine? How does that relate when we play The Cup Game? What is one way you learned The Cup Game Chant? Would you want to learn more Chants? 4. Share group example of The Cup Game song to motivate students to become experts.
