Problem Outline

Westover Electrical Inc. is facing an increasing problem with the rejected product found during the manufacturing opeeation where they couldnt find the source of the problem. For the past two month, the cost incurred due to these reject defines the investigation done to find the problem by studying the supply chain starting with the production floor in the winding department and then going to the packaging department. In the winding department, no one knows what the problem is or how to correct it. In the packaging department, many winding are found to be defective and require reworking before they can be packaged. This is consuming a lot of time and rework.

Recommendation

To help Westover Electrical Inc. to improve, some recommendations related to the workers and operators as well as to the equipments and machines are suggested. Most of the problems that were found out came from machine 3, some recommendations for that issue include: Retrain the employees responsible for that machine. Check all parts of the machine and make sure they are all in best condition, if not then replace the defective parts. There are four problems that account for most of the problems, some recommendations regarding that include: Check the procedures used in winding, wiring, and making leads. Make sure that the materials used are not the reason for the problem. Make sure the employees do not lack skills in those areas. Check the parts of the machines that are responsible for those functions. Another problem is that too many defects are spotted by the packaging department which is costing a lot of time for the packaging employees. Suggestions include: Make checking and correcting errors be done by a different person other than the person responsible for packaging. This reduces the load of the employees. If needed, increase the number of employees in the packaging department. Some extra recommendations include: Having a trained staff that is specialized with the companys methods and procedures and who are able to manage the production processes and work with the machines professionally, can greatly benefit the company in ensuring the right procedures and the effective use of the machines. The more training workers and operators have, the less likely errors will occur and the more time efficient the process will be. They will then be able to focus on the most useful procedures for their processes that produce the best products and in the least amount of time. Moreover, having an increase in the number of workers will also benefit the company in a way that more than one person can be responsible for a certain job and that in turn will reduce errors and save time. On the other hand, and to keep the pace of the work increasing successfully, the company might consider increasing the wages of the workers. An increase in the workers wage will motivate him to do better and to perform his job to the best of the companys business. The company might also consider reducing the long working hours of the workers and limit them to a certain time in which the work would be performed. This greatly helps the workers from exhausting and tiring them and will limit them to certain tasks to be performed at certain times. Finally, having a helpful, professional and a friendly environment will benefit the company and the workers themselves in accessing the work in the best way that serves the companys business.
