The effects of lack of sleep are substantial - acne, weight gain, forgetfulness, irritability, headaches, concentration issues, and difficulty learning are all potential consequences of not getting enough sleep. Doctors recommend that teenagers get nine and a half hours of sleep a day. Its suggested that adults get approximately seven to eight hours. The goal of this project was to see if the students and faculty at Origins were getting enough sleep per night. To begin my project, I surveyed thirty people at Origins High School. I asked each person how many hours they slept per day. These were my results: 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10. The first thing I did was calculate the mean of these results. My answer was approximately 5.967. My median was 5.5 and my range, which I calculated by subtracting the smallest number from the largest number, was 7. The interquartile range was 2 - I did this by subtracting quartile 1 from quartile 3. The first quartile was 5 and the third quartile was 7. To calculate the standard deviation, I subtracted the mean from all of my values, added those numbers up, divided by 30 (to find the mean of those values), and then found the square root of that number. This gave me a standard deviation of approximately 2.06. The first graph that I drew was a dot plot. To create this, first I made a horizontal line numbered from 0 to 10 to signify the number of hours slept per 24 hours by each individual. For each observed measurement that I had, I placed a dot above that number. If I had more than one dot, I stacked them on top of each other. The result was

the dot plot attached in Graph I. The next graph I made was the histogram. To make this graph, I first made an x-y graph. The x-axis represented the number of hours slept and the y-axis represented the number of people who slept for that amount per night. Then, I simply counted how many people would go into each category and made a corresponding bar graph. The results are attached in Graph II. The last graph I made was the box plot. First, I needed to have my five-number summary. This information includes the minimum number (3), quartile 1 (5), median (5.5), quartile 3 (7), and the maximum number (10). Once again, I made a horizontal line numbered from 0-10. Then I plotted the different points and then connected them. The space between the minimum number and quartile 1 (3 and 5) was a line, the space between quartile 1 and quartile 3 (5-7) was the box, the median (5.5) divided the box, and from quartile 3 to the maximum (7-10), there was another straight line. The results can be seen in Graph III. Based on my small survey, the average amount of hours that people sleep at Origins is 5.967. This number is a lot lower than the recommended amount of time that people should sleep. On average, it is recommended that teens sleep for 9.5 hours a night, but according to my research, the teens I surveyed (28 of my responders were students) sleep for much less - 5.928 hours on average. Thats about three and a half hours less than they should be sleeping! The teachers I surveyed slept for 6 and 7 hours each, so 6.5 hours on average. Compared to the 7-8 hours of sleep a night that they should be getting, that seems okay. However, this is also a very small sample. I only surveyed two teachers/adults, so they may not be the best representation of all the

adults or teachers at school. Next time, I could improve this project by asking an even amount of teachers and students in order to better compare them to each other. I could also ask more teachers and more students to participate in my project for better results. In conclusion, the students at Origins need to get more sleep!
