Socratic Seminar Lesson Plan Author: Morgan Mannion

Date Created: 4-22-2014

Topic or Unit of Study (Title): Buddhism and Hinduism

Grade Level: 9th

Materials: Power point

Summary (and Rationale): I am teaching Buddhism and Hinduism in order to give students an understanding of two of the longest lasting religions in history, and to grant them an understanding of the importance of these religions.

I. Focus and Review (Establish Prior Knowledge): 10 minutes Establish what students know about Buddhism and Hinduism, clear up misconceptions and make known the difference between Hinduism and Buddhism. Review need to know terms. II. Statement of Instructional Objective(s) and Assessments:

Objectives (content- could include other areas such as technology) When given a lecture on Buddhism and Hinduism, students should be able to have a discussion that covers all the major points of both religions.

Assessments Students will participate in a guided discussion on Buddhism and Hinduism. Each student should come to the discussion with a question in mind. This question will be answered by their peers through a seminar format discussion. At the end of the discussion, students should have their questions answered and have a grasp on Buddhism and Hinduism as a whole.

State the objective: 3 minutes Assessment: 15

III. Teacher Input (Present tasks, information and models): 50 minutes

I will begin by asking the students what they know about Buddhism and Hinduism, I will then provide them with a list of key terms, and deities in the case of Hinduism. Through the use of a power point, students will take notes on both religions in order to understand both the religions, and their historical significance. Students should write down at least one question during the lecture. IV. Guided Practice (Elicit performance, the student works with guidance): 25 minutes Once the students have the information presented in the power point, we will begin a discussion using questions that the students wrote down during the lecture. I will ask the first question (what is the biggest difference between Buddhism and Hinduism), to get the ball rolling. Then I will open the floor to student discussion. At the end of the discussion, students should have their questions answered and be able to sum up both Hinduism and Buddhism.

V. Closure (Plan for maintenance, summary): 5 minutes At the end of my lesson I will ask students the historical significance of Buddhism and Hinduism, as well as a brief description of both religions. VI. Independent Practice: none/group work

Plans for Individual Differences: I would have to have more information about the individuals difference, but if they did not feel comfortable with the group discussion, I would have the student write down their question, and then for homework go home and research the answer, providing me with a one page answer.
