Teacher Candidate: Kayla Chrisley School: Woodfields Date and Time of Lesson: 4/1/2014 Subject/Grade Level: Science/3rd
Description of Lesson: Students will compare different pitches of sounds. Students will learn that
pitch can be affected by vibrating.
Lesson Title or Essential Question that guides the lesson: Comparing different pitches of sounds. Curriculum Standards Addressed:
CCSS: 3-5.6: Compare pitch and volume of different sounds SSCA: Students will know when working with a group or partner not to physically harm another person because that is called bullying. Students will know the consequences if they do so. EEDA: Standard 4: Students will demonstrate a positive attitude toward work and the abiltity to work together.
Lesson Objective(s):
What should students know or be able to do by the end of the lesson? Objectives should be observable and measurable Antecedent: when given different pitches Behavior: Students will compare Content: different ways to change the pitch of sounds.
Materials/Resources: PowerPoint, Smart Board, Science Notebook, post assessment sheet, pencils,
guitar, drum.
Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students must know what sound is and how sound is made.
Students have not been introduced to pitch and volume in previous grades.
Procedures: 1) The lesson will start off by reviewing what was previously learned. I will show the students a PowerPoint on what sound is and how sound is made. At the end of the PowerPoint students will be asked to answer questions. . 2) We will proceed to new material which is learning to change the pitch of sounds. 3) I will show a PowerPoint that will explain in depth ways to change the pitch of sound. . Students will complete practice examples in their Science Notebook. 4) We will then discuss volume and what it means. I will have students turn and talk to their partner about different pitches. I will observe what is being said. 5) . The pitch of a sound can be the same but the volume could be different. A person yelling and a person whispering may use the same pitch but the volumes are different. Students will learn that the thickness of a string will affect the pitch and also the thinnest of a string. Students will also learn that something vibrating quickly will have a high pitch where something vibrating slowly will have a low pitch. 6) One way to change the pitch of a guitar is to pluck the thin string and to pluck the thick string. Students will also learn that hitting a drum in different areas will affect the pitch. 7) The tighter the object is the faster it vibrates. The looser the object is the lower the pitch will be. 8) I will use real instruments and have students come up with different sounds that have different pitches. 9) After we have discussed this I will review what we learned today. The floor will then be open for remarks or questions towards what we have learned. 10) Students will then go back to their desk and I will hand out a sheet for them to complete. 11) I will take up the sheet and use it as a daily grade.
This class performs better when a review is done prior to the new material. Having a review before new material is learned will reach the classes needs. Students can use the PowerPoint as a reference when learning new material and writing their responses. A PowerPoint will be used to use as a reference throughout the lesson. I will use the PowerPoint to list examples for ESOL students and low scoring readers.
