Mathematical Concepts

Big idea: Students will review the notations for and meanings of ratios. They will know how to express ratios, how to determine equivalency and be able to solve part-to part ratios as well as whole-to -whole ratios. (E-pvery Day Math, section 8-6 Raitos.) Students will know the difference between a ratio and a rate.

Common Core
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.1

Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, "The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak." "For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes."
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.2

Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, "This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar." "We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger."1

Launch: Prezi
We will go through this presentation as a group. http://prezi.com/7bnzhy8elrbd/edit/#191 Example of ratios part-to-part and part-to-whole.

Mathematical Task:

First, students will follow along and take notes with the online presentation. Second, I will model several problems on the dry erase board. Students will follow along and complete a worksheet as a class.

Possible Student Ideas: Exploration: During:

Students may not fully understand the use of the term whole in relation to the mathematical problem that they are trying to solve.

Students will work on various worksheets: pg 727 Study Link Master, pg 726 Student page. While students complete the worksheets, I will walk around the classroom and answer questions.

Assessment Plan & Math Congress: I will look over everyones completed
worksheets and then we will go over the correct answers as a group.

Gearing up:
Students will be given problems of varying degrees. They will be ask to complete those problems on the dry erase board and then explain them. There are also a couple of web-sites that they can visit that are a little more difficult.

Gearing Down: Students will practice finding equal ratios through the use of flashcards.
