UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: Defining words by category and by one or more key attributes LESSON OBJECTIVE: Given instructions, the students will independently and in pairs define words by category and by one or more key attribute by completing a handout, exploring topics and subtopics, composing additional key attributes, and completing a graphic organizer with 100% accuracy. STANDARDS ADDRESSED: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.5.b Define words by category and by one or more key attributes (e.g., a duck is a bird that swims; a tiger is a large cat with stripes). Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. MATERIALS: www.weebly.com Computers List of animal names 20 Guess My Name handouts Topics to explore Paper Pencils BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: Key Concepts: Working independently and in pairs, to define words by category and by one or more key attributes Academic Language: Attributes, characteristics, composing, concepts, descriptions, word relationships Previous lessons connection: In our previous lessons, we learned to sort words and images into categories (e.g., colors, clothing) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent. Subsequent lessons connection: In our next lesson, we will identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note places at home that are cozy). Needs for differentiated activities: Students will be grouped by previous performance and what I have observed in my classroom.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: I will begin this lesson in the computer lab and have my students play a game called Guess My Animal. I will choose one student at a time and give an animal to describe to the class. The student can name the animals characteristics and describe how it looks using only words for fellow classmates to guess and earn points. The student that guesses the animal correctly must also explain what characteristics lead to them picking that particular animal and also gets the next turn. (about 10 minutes) Procedures: Students will be given a Guess My Name handout to complete individually. They will read the clues on the handout and write the correct animal in the blank. Then, they get to make up their own for the last one. (8 minutes) After they complete the handout, they will go to my Weebly page and open the graphic organizer document. (2 minutes) I will group the students into pairs and give each pair a topic to explore the Main Idea for the graphic organizer. Then, they will choose 4 subtopics to expand on. (about 10 minutes) The students will have access to explore only the designated topic and find two characteristics of each subtopic that will complete the graphic organizer. (10 minutes) The students will print out their graphic organizer when completed. (2 minutes) Closure: To end the lesson, each student will choose an item from home (toy, pet, etc.), provide the category in which it belongs, describe the item in 5 complete sentences, and draw the item on a sheet of paper as an exit ticket. (8 minutes) ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Formative Assessment: Guess My Animal game, my observations while they are working individually and in pairs Summative Assessment: Guess My Name handout, graphic organizer, 5 sentences composed as an exit ticket MODIFICATIONS: Lower level learners can be paired with at grade level students. Lower level learners can have fewer sentences to compose. Higher level learners can be given a more challenging worksheet or assignment involving higher level thinking. .
