Latinas in U.S.

Media and Pop Culture

Kiavany Jones

Today Latinas are being hyper sexualized by U.S. pop culture and the media continues to portray and perpetuate the stereotype that Latin women are feisty, flirtatious, sexual beings. Curvy brown bodied woman have and are being used in the media in such a way because it is considered the American norm as well as being used as marketing tools.

My final research paper was focused on Latinas within US

pop culture and media in relations to marketing and the American ideal of whiteness. Within U.S. media, powerful

brown bodied women are being subjugated and portrayed as

sexual, promiscuous beings. This trend can be seen in the music industry, daytime television and news broadcasting. US media continues to depict Mexican-Americans and primarily Mexican-American women in racist, sexist ways and only allow Latina woman into certain positions based off of gender discrimination and gender roles.

synopsis

From conducting my own research:

I was able to learn about the increasing number of Mexican-Americans and Latinos in the media due to it

being the it marketing ethnicity.

Europeans and Aglo-Americans value exotic and brown bodies because they are different and have more exaggerated sexual reproductive parts. Generally speaking, more specifically the breasts, hips and backside

Research

My research relates to the field of Chicanas/ Latinas by pointing out and illuminating the illusion of diversity being falsified in the media. There is this belief that because TV and pop culture appears to be more diversified that things are

equal. This however is not true. The type of MexicanAmericans being represented by the media are often fake personas fitting into traditional, racial stereotypes. Curvy, bodacious, hyper sexualized women Mexican Gangsters : Cholos & Cholas

Latina woman have and are targeted for media purposes (economics). Depicting brown woman as exotic and desirable to make products appear more desirable.
