Lesson Title: Discourse Markers, Lesson 1 Grade Level: Advanced Intermediate Time Allotted for the Lesson: 45 minutes Short Description of Lesson (50 words or less): This lesson introduces Discourse Markers to intermediate students at CNUs ELI. The lesson covers the purpose of discourse markers, syntactical position, types of discourse markers, recognizing and categorizing discourse markers in authentic writing. The end goal of this 3 lesson unit of instruction is to have students write a play review. Classroom Layout and Grouping of Students: : Desks in U-shape facing Smart Board. Pair Work. State Standards met in this lesson (see http://www.state.tn.us/education/ci/esl/doc/ELL_Standards.pdf): R.6.2 Understand relationships between parts of a text (e.g., cause and effect, compare and contrast, chronological ordering). Materials, Resources and Technology (needed for teaching lesson): 1.Media Equipment to stream video 2. Power Point/ Part 1: Make the Connection 3. Handout: Discourse Markers Chart 4. Discourse Markers Worksheet and Answer key 3. Handout for Pair Work: Directors Notes 4 .Realia: Program from Legacy Theater production of You Cant Take It With You Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to identify discourse markers and group them into usage categories. Instructional Procedures: 1. Lesson Set Show You Tube teaser from ASOLO and talk with class about upcoming class field trip to the Gentry Auditorium to see CNU Lyric Theatre production of You Cant Take It With You. Students will be writing a review of the play.

2. Techniques and Activities


A. 5 min Warm Up Questions: This is a popular play. Has anyone ever seen it before? Do you know someone in the cast? B. 5 min Power Point Instruction ( I will email this to you.) Shows examples of Discourse Markers, Possible Syntactical Positions, and the various purpose they serve as sign posts in a text. The purpose of this instruction is to prepare students for identifying and categorizing discourse markers in an authentic text.

C. 15 min Team Work Distribute Discourse Worksheet #1 and Connectors-Chart Explain Instructions Divide into groups of 3 (3rd opinion will stimulate more thought to the process) Teacher circulates to observe and assist Reassemble and examine various possibilities. (Most likely, different choices have been made)
