Standard: HS-PS1-4 Matter and its Interactions

I can statement: Develop a model to illustrate that the release or absorption of energy from a
chemical reaction system depends upon the changes in total bon energy.
(Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that a chemical reaction is a system that affects the energy change.
Examples of models could include molecular-level drawings and diagrams of reactions, graphs showing the relative
energies of reactants and products, and representations showing energy is conserved.)

In addition to level 3 performance, in- depth inferences and
applications that go beyond what was taught in class.

Calculate the total bond energy changes during a chemical
reaction from the bond energies of reactants and products.
Describe, design, and/or conduct a lab above and beyond
the original expectations found in level 3.

Show how to calculate
the total bond energy
changes during
chemical reactions.
3
The Student Will:

Develop a model based on evidence to illustrate the
relationships between systems or between components of a
system.

Demonstrate that a stable molecule has less energy than
the same set of atoms separated.

Distinguish when energy goes into or out of a system based
on the chemical processes and their rates based on
collisions of molecules and rearrangement of molecules.

Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include calculating
the total bond energy changes during a chemical reaction from the
bond energies of reactants and products.

The Student exhibits no major errors or omissions.
Create a model to
illustrate the
relationships between
systems and its
components.
2
There are no major errors or omissions regarding the simpler
details and processes as the student:

Define the following: energy, matter, exothermic,
endothermic, activation energy, kinetic energy, open system,
closed system, molecules, bonds.

Explain the difference between exothermic and endothermic.

However, the student exhibits major errors or omission
regarding the more complex ideas and processes.
Supply correct
definitions or matching
of definitions on
homework and
quizzes.

Successfully explain
how endothermic and
exothermic are
different.
