Reflection of Assessment Worksheet

As a student pursuing music education, I had the pleasure to student teach at the
State College Area School District and go into a classroom at the Mount Nittany Middle
School. Learning from educators, such as Dr. Thornton, Dr. Clements, Mrs. Shutes, and
Mr. Shevock, has been inspiring, encouraging, and enlightening. As future music
educators, we often work in teams. I was assigned to student teach in a team with Mr.
Katzen and Ms. Rhodes. My teammates have been dedicated to the assignments and
enjoyable to work with as we develop innovative approaches to instructing the students,
as well as divide the workload of the teachable moments. Specifically, I taught the song
"Spring, Spring."
Ironically, this Spring Semester accumulated more snow than in recent years. The
song not only warms up the students voices, but warms up their minds and hearts to the
advent of springtime in the midst of the ice and wintry weather. I developed a worksheet
alliteratively called the Text Tester. I ask the students the question, Do you remember the
text to Spring, Spring? My worksheet uses the program Crossword Weaver.
By creating a crossword puzzle, I reinforce the lyrical text of the song, Spring,
Spring. This innovative and fun approach to learning helps the students develop
memorization, language, and analytical skills in a concise, informative, and entertaining
way. Considering the age of students at the middle school level, my word descriptions
were age appropriate and succinct. Each of the descriptions defined lyrics of the song,
Spring, Spring. I also provided an answer key to the worksheet.
As the Spring Semester marches on, I look forward to the lyrics of Spring,
Spring coming alive in the lives of the students I taught. I will welcome the green
hillsides peeking out of the white wintry snowbanks.
