Name & Link to Tech Tool or Tool homepage: Front Row
Brief Description of Tech Tool: Front Row is an integrated adaptive curriculum, much like
MobyMax, that will help K-8 students improve and retain skills. Front Row was designed to
work on iPads and computers.
Technical & Cost considerations: Front Row is free for teachers to use. It does come
with a package for administrators to use to manage achievement in the school.
Front Row works best on the Chrome browser. It does not work with Internet Explorer.
Evaluation
Description of Learning Activity
Students will take a diagnostic pre-test for each domain. After the student has taken the
pre-test the program will automatically adjust to meet their needs. Students will use
Front Row during math rotations and as choice centers. Student progress monitoring is
available and will inform the teacher about the time each student spends working on
Front Row and the progress being made.
1. Learning Activity Types
LA-Practice - practicing for uency
LA-Present - (read or attend to) presentation of new content/ideas
LA-Explore - exploring/investigating mathematical ideas
LA-Apply - applying mathematics to problems and situations
2. What mathematics is being learned?
NCTM Standards
NCTM-N&0-understand numbers - understand numbers, ways of representing
numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems;
NCTM-N&0-understand operations - understand meanings of operations and
how they relate to one another;
NCTM-N&0-compute fluently - compute fluently and make reasonable
estimates
NCTM-Alg-patterns - understand patterns, relations, and functions;
NCTM-Alg-symbols - represent and analyze mathematical situations and
structures using algebraic symbols;
NCTM-Alg-models - use mathematical models to represent and understand
quantitative relationships;
NCTM-Alg-change - analyze change in various contexts.
NCTM-Geo-analyze - analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-
dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about
geometric relationships;
NCTM-Geo-specify locations - specify locations and describe spatial
relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems;
NCTM-Geo-transformations - apply transformations and use symmetry to
analyze mathematical situations;
NCTM-Geo-visualization - use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric
modeling to solve problems.
NCTM-Meas-understand - understand measurable attributes of objects and the
units, systems, and processes of measurement;
NCTM-Meas-apply - apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to
determine measurements.
Prociency Strands
PS-conceptual understanding
PS-procedural uency
PS-strategic competence
PS-adaptive reasoning
3. How is the mathematics represented?
Students receive mathematical questions presented with virtual manipulatives as well as recorded
demonstrations to introduce a topic. Students get practice with what a computer given standard
test is like. Students are also presented with several fact mastery modules that allows them to
increase uency in basic skills.
4. What role does technology play?
The most appealing tech advantage is the adaptive nature of the program. As students
practice or test, Front Row makes adjustments to meet the learning need of the student.
This program would take several hours for a teacher to manually adapt to each
students need.
Affordances of Technology for Supporting Learning
Computing & Automating - Basic facts are reviewed and fact uency practiced.
Representing Ideas & Thinking -
Accessing Information - There are prerecorded lessons to introduce new topics when
students are ready to move on.
Communicating & Collaborating -
Capturing & Creating -
5. How does the technology t or interact with the social
context of learning?
Front Row is an individual program. However, the teacher can pair students with one
acting as a peer tutor.
6. What do teachers and learners need to know?
This is a very rich program, teachers will need time to thoroughly maximize the benefits
of Front Row. Teachers need to know how to read the report card provided by Front
Row and student needs to know how to log onto the site and retain username and
password.
