I Peuton penser la politique (Paris: Seuil, 1985) is a text that originated in papers
Badiou gave at two conferences on philosophy and politics organized by
Jean-Luc ancy and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, which were published -
without including Badiou's texts -as Reouer Ie politique (Paris: Galilee, 1981)
el L retrit du politique (Paris: Galilee, 1983). An exclusive selection of Nancy
and Lacoue-Labarthe's contributions to these collections was translated in
S. Sparks (ed.), Retreating the political (London: Routledge, 1997). Badiou's text
is currently being translated by Bruno Bosteels: A. Badiou, Can Politics Be
Thought? followed by OJAn Obscure Disaster: The End q the Tuth q State
(Durham: Duke University Press,frthcoming).

3 This is an expansion of the De l'ideologie position that states that it is only
during a political confict that ideology divides and presents its multiplicity

work to be 'Sketches for a History of Being as Metaphysics' and cites it in
support of his recasting of the Heideggerean problematic. See M. Heidegger,

7 Ray Brassier is quite correct to remark that it is not clear on what basis
Badiou derives his Lacanian thesis 'there is Oneness', and so, despite its
appearance in a philosophical prolegomena to the identifcation of math
ematics with set theory, its only basis can be set theory itself and its manipu
lation of unied sets in the form of variables. See R. Brassier, 'Presentation

of Badiou's ontology in the name of analytic metaphysics in Ect autour de

12 If it were possible to construct a genealogy within Badiou's oeuvre for this
concept of an ineluctable ground for the existence of a political state or
mechanism of re-grouping, one would refer back to Althusser's conception
of irreducibilit of the science-ideolog relationship.

15 There is a well-known problem with the distinction beteen natural and
historical multiples in Badiou's metaontolog On the one hand, the ordinal
sets are said to write the being of natural situations. On the other hand, the
axiom of foundation species that every set contains an evental-site, an
element whose intersection with the initial set is void; thus all sets write the
being of historical situations. Badiou gets around this dicult wth an
awkward use of Heidegger's ontological diference: in the situation of
ontolog all sets are founded by the void-set; in ontic or non-ontological
situations, certain situations are historical if they are founded by non-void
singular multiples. Note that Aindya Bhattacharya, as noted above, has
developed a work around for this difcult

ception of production according to which potentiality only exists in the
moment of being actualized. See Aistotle's refutation of te Megarians in

25 Logiques des mondes, 381. These difculties, implicitly acknowledged in Ben

and Event, concern the Axiom of Foundation and the consequent belonging
of a tye of evental-site -the void-set -to every situation which undoes

Badiou's regionalization of being (see n. 15). See Being and Event, 188-9.
26 L. Althusser, Pour Marx, 110.

27 Further examination of this point would require an analysis of the theory
of points in Lgiques des mondes. The question is whether or not it constitutes,

in Badiou's own terms, a 'coup de droit', a objectivizing correction of
what he now diagnoses as an excessive emphasis on the subjective side
of generic truth procedures in Being and Event. See Badiou's intervention on
24 November 2006 during the Autour de Logiques des mondes conference on the

45 It is not Badiou but Georges Canguilhem who originally states 'philosophy
does not produce truths' in his interview with Badiou in 1965. This state
ment occasioned no little discussion in the roundtable beteen Raymond
Aron, Aain Badiou, Georges Canguilhem, Michel Foucault,Jean Hypolite
and Paul Ricoeur which concluded the series of interews.

his formulation of the postulate of materialism, an essential element in his
anchoring of the logics of worlds to the set theory ontology of those words.
